SAN FRANCISCO – The Cincinnati Reds dropped two of three games to the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park from Aug. 24-26, but the series finale produced one of the wildest comebacks of the season.<\/p>\n
San Francisco won the first two games, 5-0 and 3-1, before Cincinnati erased a 9-3 deficit in the ninth inning Wednesday to win 10-9.<\/p>\n
The Giants opened the series with a 5-0 shutout Monday. San Francisco scored four times in the first inning against Reds starter Chase Burns, who allowed five earned runs in 3.2 innings and took the loss.<\/p>\n
Giants starter Carson Whisenhunt struck out five before leaving in the third inning with an elbow injury. San Francisco\u2019s bullpen finished the shutout.<\/p>\n
The Giants followed with a 3-1 victory Tuesday to clinch the series. Drew Cavanaugh gave San Francisco an early lead with a two-run single in the first inning before Rafael Devers launched a solo home run into McCovey Cove in the fifth for his 28th homer of the season.<\/p>\n
Anthony Molina provided 4.1 scoreless innings in relief after Giants starter Adrian Houser left with an arm injury. Sal Stewart\u2019s ninth-inning solo homer ended a 23-inning scoreless stretch for Cincinnati, but the Reds could not complete the comeback.<\/p>\n
Wednesday\u2019s finale was a different story.<\/p>\n
The Giants appeared to have the game under control with a 9-3 lead entering the ninth. Jonah Cox, Devers and Shay Whitcomb each homered for San Francisco, while Drew Gilbert added a three-run double.<\/p>\n
Then the Reds erupted.<\/p>\n
Eugenio Su\u00e1rez started the comeback with a grand slam off Dylan Smith. Cincinnati followed with consecutive bunt singles before Jose Trevino\u2019s sacrifice fly made it 9-8.<\/p>\n
Tyler Stephenson then delivered the go-ahead RBI single as the Reds completed a seven-run ninth inning and stunned San Francisco.<\/p>\n
The comeback marked the largest ninth-inning blown lead in Giants franchise history. San Francisco had previously been 2,208-0 when leading by at least six runs entering the final inning.<\/p>\n
