The city council had until August 31 to act on the petition. It did not.<\/p>\n<p>That inaction opened the door for the group to go back to the city clerk and request that the question go to voters.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/library.municode.com\/mo\/kansas_city\/codes\/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=PTICHKAMI_ARTVIIINRERE_DIV1IN_S701INPE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">city charter<\/a>, the clerk must next notify the city council of the request, and the council must place the question on the next available city election. The new law would require any future funding, designing, planning, or permitting decisions related to sports and entertainment venues with more than 2,500 to go to a citywide vote for approval.<\/p>\n<p>That law would apply to future issues related to the Royals, as well as Starlight Theater, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, CPKC Stadium, and other venues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll continue our work to bring an outstanding world-class baseball stadium to the core of our city, and there is nothing that changed yesterday, today or tomorrow,\u201d Mayor Quinton Lucas said.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1788304340_216_.jpeg\" alt=\"Mayor Quinton Lucas.jpg\"  width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Jason Gould\/KSHB.<\/p>\n<p>        Mayor Quinton Lucas of Kansas City, Missouri.<\/p>\n<p>The city council approved funding and development <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kshb.com\/news\/local-news\/stadium-plan\/downtown-crown-kansas-city-approves-agreements-to-bring-royals-stadium-to-crown-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">agreements with the Royals in August<\/a>. They committed $600 million in city funding to the $1.9 billion stadium project total.<\/p>\n<p>The city council will review a rezoning request on Thursday to pave the way for the new stadium.<\/p>\n<p>The city charter says the council can repeal any ordinance passed by voters if nine of the 13 members agree.
