A few weeks back, we asked our readers to grade the 2026 MLB local TV broadcasters. They anointed the San Diego Padres TV broadcasters as the best in the business<\/a> for the second straight year.<\/p>\n

Baseball is a sport appreciated in many ways. And while the TV booths and voices get much of the glory, we wanted to make sure we put the spotlight on the local radio broadcast as well. The original way to enjoy a Major League Baseball game from the comfort of your home, the radio call remains synonymous with baseball\u2019s romantic nostalgia, whether you\u2019re listening at home, in the car, on the beach, or anywhere else.<\/p>\n

We asked Awful Announcing readers to evaluate every local radio broadcast crew for all 30 MLB teams, assign each a grade from A to F, and share comments. The results, based on more than 10,000 individual grades, are below.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an interesting year for local radio rankings as it includes several longtime and iconic voices in their final season on the call (Mets\u2019 Howie Rose<\/a>, Mariners\u2019 Rick Rizzs<\/a>). It\u2019ll be interesting to see not just where their broadcasts landed but where they rank next year with their replacements.<\/p>\n

This is the second year we\u2019re doing these rankings. You can find the 2025 version here<\/a> for reference. And if there\u2019s any consolation to those near the bottom of the rankings, it\u2019s that even then, most of the grades don\u2019t go below the A\/B\/C threshold.<\/p>\n

The rankings are listed below, from No. 30 to No. 1. Each entry lists the team, its primary play-by-play announcer, primary analyst(s), notable substitutes, and game reporters (If we forgot someone, please let us know<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Bringing up the rear, the Rockies\u2019 radio feed appears to run into criticism when it comes to engaging listeners. Veteran radio voice Jack Corrigan was acknowledged by some as a \u201cpro\u2019s pro\u201d and \u201cas good as ever\u201d with a classic home run call (\u201cIt\u2019s touch\u00a0\u2018em all time!\u201d), but critics worry his overall style is \u201cdull\u201d and \u201coutdated.\u201d The addition of first-year voice Zach Goodman drew mixed reviews from graders, with some saying he\u2019s \u201cgot some skills that should grow with the team\u2019s young core,\u201d while others labeled him a \u201cnepo hire\u201d and felt his play-by-play was \u201cnot major league quality.\u201d\u00a0Jeff Dooley got some love, with one grader adding, \u201cthe broadcast jumps significantly\u201d when he\u2019s on.<\/p>\n

The good news for the Marlins crew is that they\u2019re out of the basement. The bad news is that it\u2019s not by much. Young play-by-play announcer Jack McMullen earned individual praise as a \u201ckeeper\u201d and a \u201cbig, big improvement,\u201d thanks to strong preparation and a great radio voice. Supporting analysts like Kelly Saco and Gaby S\u00e1nchez also receive positive mentions. However, the broadcast is dragged down by an \u201covercrowded\u201d booth and a perceived \u201clack of experience all around.\u201d Critical graders complain about long, off-topic conversations\u2014such as \u201ctalking about the difference between 2% and whole milk for three minutes\u201d during live action. \u201cToo many cooks in the kitchen,\u201d opined one grader.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow refreshing, a [radio] team that doesn\u2019t make it all about themselves, doesn\u2019t speak to hear the sound of their own voices,\u201d added one fan. \u201cAnd actually is adept at describing the action and acting as the eyes of the listener.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

28. Los Angeles Angels (Terry Smith,\u00a0Mark Langston,\u00a0Wayne Hagin,\u00a0Bobby Grich): 1.81<\/p>\n

A bit of a dip this season for the Angels\u2019 radio broadcast. Even so, Terry Smith and Mark Langston were credited with offering \u201cclear, accurate game descriptions\u201d with \u201cpleasing\u201d voices that \u201cavoid irritating redundant banter.\u201d However, the broadcast was heavily penalized due to organizational decisions by the Angels, most notably the team\u2019s controversial policy of not sending radio announcers on the road<\/a>. Listeners express intense frustration with remote broadcasts, noting that play-by-play can be \u201cseemingly behind the play\u201d while navigating \u201cexcessive commercial reads.\u201d Wayne Hagin\u2019s commentary also draws sharp criticism. As one voter bluntly sums it up: \u201cQuality voices, but cheap owner policies ruin the broadcast.\u201d<\/p>\n

Play-by-play voice Robert Ford earns widespread respect as a \u201csolid professional\u201d who is \u201cnever too high, never too low\u201d on the call. His \u201cdetailed,\u201d \u201cmethodical\u201d approach keeps listeners engaged, and his calls during Houston\u2019s championship runs<\/a> remain \u201cfond memories\u201d for fans. However, partner Steve Sparks draws mixed reactions, with critics claiming his humor can feel \u201cforced\u201d and his color analysis \u201crepetitive.\u201d Other graders dismissed the broadcast as lacking excitement, noting that \u201cnothing stands out and that\u2019s the problem.\u201d Still, for fans seeking a calm, reliable call, Ford has cemented himself as a voice worth listening to.<\/p>\n

The Pirates\u2019 broadcast has almost exactly the same average grade and ranking as last year. Something to be said for consistency, right? The dividing factor in listener appreciation appears to depend on who is calling the game. Greg Brown earned lots of praise for his \u201cauthentic enthusiasm,\u201d while color analysts Bob Walk and John Wehner provide an \u201cold-school, no-nonsense\u201d player perspective. Conversely, Joe Block receives heavy criticism from respondents who find his mechanics inconsistent, with one voter remarking that he \u201cbrings the entire group down.\u201d Younger analysts Matt Capps and Neil Walker were highlighted as promising additions. Ultimately, while fans enjoy Brown and Walk, Block\u2019s mixed reviews pull down the overall grade.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Kris Atteberry continues to impress some listeners after replacing Cory Provus, who moved to television, with his \u201cdeep statistical knowledge\u201d and \u201cpreparation.\u201d However, Atteberry\u2019s polarizing vocal style generates significant pushback, with detractors complaining he \u201ctries too hard to sound smart\u201d or drowns out game action with \u201cnon-stop talking\u201d about numbers.\u00a0Former Twins outfielder Dan Gladden gets a lot of praise as well, as \u201cone of the best radio analysts in the majors,\u201d though his play-by-play fill-in work can be a little \u201crough.\u201d A real split consensus in the comments.<\/p>\n

Another broadcast that took a slight dip in the rankings compared to last year. Play-by-play announcer Tommy Thrall is viewed as a \u201csolid\u201d and \u201cdependable\u201d voice, but color analyst Jeff Brantley (\u201cThe Cowboy\u201d) is the undisputed star of the show. Listeners describe Brantley as \u201crelatable, hilarious, and brashly honest,\u201d noting that his unfiltered insights and mechanical knowledge \u201ccarry the broadcast.\u201d Jim Day and Chris Welsh provide decent support, though Welsh\u2019s \u201ctraditional\u201d mindset draws occasional critiques. Some voters dismiss the booth as feeling a bit \u201cflat\u201d or \u201cboring\u201d during non-Brantley innings. However, many Reds fans consider Thrall and Brantley \u201ca severely underrated duo\u201d that beats watching the game on TV.<\/p>\n

The Athletics\u2019 radio broadcast moved in the right direction in this year\u2019s rankings. No small thing considering the uncertainty surrounding the franchise. Lead voice Ken Korach was celebrated as \u201can amazing beacon of consistency\u201d and \u201cone of the best out there.\u201d Meanwhile, fans felt Johnny Doskow brings an \u201cappealing\u201d voice and great personal story, though critics note he can occasionally struggle to \u201cproperly convey the emotions of the moment.\u201d Listeners sympathize with the booth calling games for a struggling team, noting that Korach\u2019s regal delivery is often \u201cthe only thing saving a miserable season.\u201d While some graders voice nostalgia for past announcers, they remain deeply appreciative of Korach\u2019s \u201cprofessionalism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eisenberg earns glowing praise as \u201cone of the most underrated broadcasters in the sport,\u201d lauded for his \u201cincredible cadence\u201d and wise-beyond-his-years \u201cpicture-painting ability.\u201d While Matthews\u2019 \u201cstoic, veteran voice\u201d evokes decades of Royals history, several voters note the 83-year-old icon is understandably \u201cpast his prime.\u201d TV crossover voice Ryan Lefebvre also adds \u201cpolished depth\u201d when stepping in. Overall, respondents describe it as a \u201ccharming,\u201d \u201cunderrated booth\u201d with a bright future in Eisenberg.<\/p>\n

The Diamondbacks\u2019 radio broadcast saw a nice move up the rankings this year. Play-by-play voice Chris Garagiola earns high marks for stepping into the lead chair following the retirement of the iconic Greg Schulte. Fans love Garagiola\u2019s \u201cgenuine\u201d local connection, noting \u201chis passion is clear and it makes me excited to listen every day.\u201d Color commentators Tom Candiotti and Josh Collmenter supply \u201cvaluable pitcher insights,\u201d while Mike Ferrin offers \u201cquality\u201d backup play-by-play. On the negative side, skeptical respondents argue Garagiola \u201cdoesn\u2019t really have a feel for radio\u201d yet, suggesting his \u201cvisual style\u201d is better suited for television. Nevertheless, local supporters feel the young crew\u2019s \u201cenergy level is perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cChris Garagiola has to be one of the most underrated MLB play-by-play guys, and it\u2019s probably because the D-backs don\u2019t have the national reach that other teams do,\u201d said one grader. \u201cRegardless, he\u2019s extremely sharp with his call, has great energy\/excitement, and knows how to have a conversation with the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the booth receives significant pushback from some for leaning into \u201chyper-homerism\u201d and frequently \u201ctrashing the opposing team and umpires<\/a>.\u201d Others express annoyance over repetitive sponsor placements and side topics during slow innings. Ultimately, while fans acknowledge the crew is \u201csuper knowledgeable,\u201d the heavy home-team bias seems to hold down the grade.<\/p>\n

The Dodgers\u2019 radio broadcast saw a significant drop this season, though given the sizable number of F grades and negative comments, we have a feeling some of that is runoff from how people feel about the franchise\u2019s general reputation at the moment<\/a>. Longtime voice Charley Steiner continues to return in a limited way<\/a>, and his presence is \u201calways welcome\u201d and \u201ca great story.\u201d For the most part, the Dodgers\u2019 multi-person booth is anchored by Stephen Nelson and Tim Neverett, both of whom draw praise for their \u201cgood fundamental\u201d play-by-play mechanics and \u201cgreat storytelling ability.\u201d Former player Rick Monday brings \u201cveteran authority\u201d to his analysis. On the flip side, critical voters feel Neverett can be \u201ctoo opinionated\u201d and argue that Nelson\u2019s delivery feels \u201ca bit engineered\u201d for television rather than radio. The constant rotation of announcers also leaves some listeners wishing for \u201cmore consistency.\u201d Still, defenders view it as a \u201cvery good crew from top to bottom.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first broadcast in the rankings that had a B as its most common grade, the scores were very mixed overall for the Yankees. Veteran announcer Dave Sims brings plenty of \u201crequisite enthusiasm\u201d and energy to the microphone, taking over the role from John Sterling. Longtime analyst Suzyn Waldman remains a polarizing but respected figure, with loyal fans insisting she is \u201cone of a kind\u201d and \u201clong overdue for the Hall of Fame.\u201d However, critics argue Sims can be \u201clackadaisical in painting the word picture\u201d and occasionally struggles with radio game flow compared to TV. Young contributor Emmanuel Berbari receives positive mentions as a \u201cfantastic\u201d talent with a \u201cbright future.\u201d Overall, while some dismiss the crew as \u201coverrated\u201d or \u201cnot interested in how baseball is looked at in 2026,\u201d\u00a0 supporters maintain that \u201cDave and Suzyn are a fun listen.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to our graders, Andy Freed and Neil Solondz lead an \u201cexcellent, no-frills broadcast\u201d that earns consistent praise for keeping listeners \u201cinformed and engaged.\u201d Solondz is singled out as an absolute fan favorite, with graders calling him \u201cincredible\u201d and \u201cthe man, the myth, the legend.\u201d The radio broadcast garnered praise for the way it \u201ceducates, entertains, and informs.\u201d Minor critiques targeted guest analysts like Doug Waechter for \u201ctrying too hard to be funny,\u201d but the core play-by-play duo receives top marks.<\/p>\n
