Mariners designated hitter Dominic Canzone had his guard up after hitting a routine grounder to Red Sox pitcher Payton Tolle in the third inning<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n

Canzone wasn\u2019t sure if he was about to get leveled by the linebacker-sized 6-foot-6, 250-pound lefty.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was definitely confused at first because I saw him barreling down on me,\u201d Canzone said Wednesday. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018What is he doing?\u2019 And then he had a huge smile on his face, so I was like, \u2018All right, he\u2019s gonna he\u2019s gonna say something.\u2019 He goes, \u2018I\u2019m gonna give you a hug, brother,\u2019 or something along those lines, and then I was like, \u2018all right, this is a cool, funny moment.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Canzone said he\u2019s never been tagged out with a hug.<\/p>\n

He also reiterated what Tolle said Monday \u2014 the two had never previously met.<\/p>\n

Tolle did reach out to Canzone on social media after what\u2019s become a viral moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe hit me up and was just like, \u2018Thanks for being cool about it.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Yeah, it was a funny moment.\u2019 It\u2019s pretty cool. So yeah, seems like a great guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy referenced the moment on Wednesday afternoon when asked about Tolle\u2019s personality.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe hugged a guy on the field,\u201d Tracy said. \u201cHe\u2019s awesome. He\u2019s obviously a great competitor, but he does it in a different way. He\u2019s been through so much<\/a> in his own life. He truly plays the game, when you watch him, this guy enjoys what he\u2019s doing. He has a full joy of going out there and competing, regardless of how it turns out. And he carries that same personality even when he\u2019s not pitching. He lifts people up around him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s always smiling. When he comes out to the dugout when he\u2019s not pitching, it\u2019s one of the most exciting to see him come through, doing all of the handshakes. He just \u2014 the best way I can describe it is there are certain people who have an innate ability to just lift people up around them just by seeing them. That\u2019s who he is.\u201d<\/p>\n
