The second Tommy Pham era in Chicago came to a hilariously quick end this weekend. The 38-year-old was placed on the 10-day injured list with a calf strain<\/a> after taking just one at bat with the team. With just 19 games remaining in the 2026 regular season, Pham may not play another game this year. As a corresponding move for Pham, the White Sox added a third catcher to the roster, bringing back once-promising youngster Edgar Quero and giving him a third chance on the MLB roster.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Quero, 23, was first acquired by the White Sox in the 2023 deadline deal that sent pitchers Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez to the Angels. He posted promising numbers in the minor leagues and made his big league debut for the White Sox in April of 2025. Quero spent the rest of the season on the major league roster, slashing .268\/.333\/.356 with five home runs and a .689 OPS in 111 games. During his rookie year, Quero demonstrated advanced contact skills and strike zone recognition, but didn\u2019t make a ton of impact contact and struggled defensively.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The White Sox sent Quero to work on his launch angle and bat speed this offseason and he went to Driveline to work on it<\/a>. Whatever adjustments Quero made ended up doing more harm than good for him in 2026, however. A preseason injury to Kyle Teel thrust Quero into a big role right off the bat, <\/a>and he looked completely lost at the plate. With few other options at the position, he stayed on the roster until Teel\u2019s return in June, but slugged .196 in April and .158 in June, with a slightly better May sandwiched in between. Quero spent the next month in Charlotte and came back in July following Teel\u2019s second injury. Between July 27th and August 13th, Quero went 10-for-27, and it looked like he may have been turning the corner at the plate, but the White Sox sent him back to Triple-A <\/a>upon adding Jake Rogers to their roster.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Quero hasn\u2019t posted overwhelming numbers in Charlotte this season with a .627 OPS and just one home run, but the White Sox have given him a third opportunity on the roster nonetheless. How much he\u2019ll play with two other catchers around is not yet known. Kyle Teel is expected to get the bulk of the starts against right-handed pitching, though he may get more frequent off-days to try and keep him fresh down the stretch. Jake Rogers has stronger numbers against left-handed pitching and plays better defense than Quero, so he seems like a more natural option to platoon with Teel. Perhaps Quero will just be a bench bat option against left-handed pitching. Will Venable hit Quero against a lefty on Sunday night and he drew a walk, so he doesn\u2019t appear afraid to use Quero in those situations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Regardless of volume of at bats this time around, time is running out for Quero to establish himself as a starting caliber player at the big league level. The White Sox can\u2019t afford to give him an endless leash to figure things out with the team trying to contend for a division title. The team and fans better hope that the third time is the charm for Quero.<\/p>\n
