Texas Rangers<\/a> infielder Corey Seager was nothing short of dominant during his second season in Texas, and it cranked up even more so in October. The result? The team\u2019s first-ever World Series championship.<\/p>\n

Here are 10 things to know Seager, including his 2023 season capped off with his second World Series MVP.<\/a><\/p>\n

Name: Corey Drew Seager<\/p>\n

Date of birth: April 27, 1994<\/p>\n

Measurables: 6-4, 215 pounds<\/p>\n

Birthplace: Charlotte, NC<\/p>\n

High school: Northwest Cabarrus (Concord, NC)<\/p>\n

2. Big winner of the shift ban<\/p>\n

As a hard-hitting lefty, Seager wasn\u2019t much of a fan of the shift strategy while it was still allowed in the big leagues. Then it was banned before the 2023 season.<\/p>\n

ESPN\u2019s Bradford Doolittle felt Seager was the biggest winner<\/a> of the shift ban. Seager\u2019s numbers aggressively back that up.<\/a><\/p>\n

Seager\u2019s slash line in the pre-shift era was .305\/.375\/.502. His numbers skyrocketed in 2023 to .327\/.390\/.623. The Rangers are more than happy with that, of course. If it weren\u2019t for the existence of Shohei Ohtani<\/a> and Seager\u2019s pesky hamstring injury, he would\u2019ve won the AL MVP in 2023. But again, Ohtani.<\/p>\n

His power is historic for players like him, as he is the first left-handed hitting shortstop to hit 200 home runs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

3. Strong start<\/p>\n

Though he made his MLB debut in 2015, Seager\u2019s first full season in the big leagues came with a bang in 2016. As a 22-year-old rookie, Seager played in 157 games and hit 26 home runs to go along with 40 doubles.<\/p>\n

He also put up a slash line of .308\/.365\/.512 which earned him an All-Star appearance, a Silver Slugger, National League Rookie of the Year honors and a third-place finish in the MVP voting behind the winner Kris Bryant.<\/p>\n

Seager followed up his strong rookie season by earning his second All-Star appearance and second Silver Slugger award in 2017.<\/p>\n

4. His brother was a longtime Ranger-killer<\/p>\n

Corey\u2019s older brother Kyle Seager spent 11 seasons as a third baseman in the majors, all for the Rangers\u2019 division rival Seattle Mariners.<\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t take the elder Seager long to incite a bitterness within the Rangers fanbase, as he had a knack for going off whenever he suited up against Texas.<\/p>\n

Kyle Seager had a career OPS of .763; against the Rangers it bumped up over 100 points to .879. He hit .290\/.365\/.514 in 182 games played against the Rangers with 37 home runs and 121 RBIs, both of those numbers higher than what he posted against any other team.<\/p>\n

Thankfully Corey came along and restored the good name of Seager within the Rangers\u2019 fanbase.<\/p>\n

4. Injury history<\/p>\n

Despite all of Seager\u2019s success at a young age, staying on the field has been difficult for the 29-year-old due to various injuries.<\/p>\n

In 2018, he played just 26 games before suffering a right UCL strain that required Tommy John surgery, ending his season. In 2019, Seager missed a month from the middle of June through the middle of July due to a hamstring injury. In 2021, Seager was hit by Miami Marlins pitcher Ross Detwiler with a pitch that fractured his right metacarpal in the middle of May. He would return at the end of July and remain healthy through the rest of the regular season and playoffs. Seager also had a pair of injuries in the 2022 season.<\/p>\n

Seager had two sizeable stints on the IL during the Rangers\u2019 2023 season, first in April with a hamstring injury and again in July with a sprained thumb. Seager ended up playing 119 games for the Rangers in 2023.<\/p>\n

His injury issues followed him into the 2024 season. He underwent two sports hernia surgeries in 2024.<\/p>\n

The first one took place in January, as he dealt with a hernia in the latter stages of the 2023 season<\/a>. It didn\u2019t improve in the offseason, so he underwent surgery and missed most of 2024 spring training<\/a>. Without a ramp-up in spring training, Seager started the 2024 season slowly as he worked back into shape.<\/p>\n

Seager was shut down for the final month of the season in 2024 to get another sports hernia surgery, except this one had developed on the opposite side<\/a>. He is expected to be ready for spring training in 2025.<\/p>\n

His pesky hamstring flared up once again, causing him to miss 26 games over two separate IL stints during the 2025 season. During his second IL stint, he left the team to meet with hamstring specialists<\/a> to identify changes he could make to prevent the injury going forward.<\/p>\n

5. His piggy bank is overflowing<\/p>\n

The $325 million contract Seager agreed to in the winter of 2021<\/a> was the largest guaranteed deal in Rangers franchise history. Seager and his double-play partner Marcus Semien agreed to deals with 24 hours that combined for half a billion dollars.<\/p>\n

That duo really came to fruition for the Rangers in 2023 when they both won the Silver Slugger awards for their respective positions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

6. Not a big talker<\/p>\n

Seager isn\u2019t exactly a vocal leader and he won\u2019t exactly make for a good soundbite with his postgame interview (although there are exceptions<\/a> — we\u2019ll get to that later). In fact, really the only time he gets to talking is when he\u2019s showering his teammates with praise.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a very stoic player,\u201d his middle-infield partner Semien said during the Rangers\u2019 playoff run.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love emotion. I love when people show emotion. It\u2019s just not who I am and how I am,\u201d Seager has said. \u201cMy brothers pretty much beat that out of me, unfortunately.\u201d<\/p>\n

But, again, there are exceptions…<\/p>\n

7. The biggest home run in Rangers\u2019 history?<\/p>\n

Seager showed emotion and then some<\/a> when he stepped into the box during the ninth inning of Game 1 of the World Series vs. the Diamondbacks and cranked an absolute mammoth 2-run blast that tied the game and forced extra innings. Adolis Garcia eventually hit a bomb of his own to give Texas the Game 1 win.<\/p>\n

How different could the Rangers\u2019 fortunes have been if the Diamondbacks took Game 1?<\/p>\n

I guess we\u2019ll never know…<\/p>\n

Seager had a serious case of \u201cgetting the last laugh\u201d<\/a> with a shot across the bow of Alex Bregman and the rival Astros at the Rangers\u2019 World Series victory parade.<\/a><\/p>\n

Bregman, in a celebration video after the Astros had stolen the AL West from Texas on the last day of the season, had quipped: \u201cA lot of people were wondering what it was going to be like if the Astros didn\u2019t win the division … I guess we\u2019ll never know.\u201d Champagne popping ensued.<\/p>\n

As it turned out, Corey Seager remembered that line, and offered up one of those rare Seager soundbites in a perfectly-delivered retort at the parade:<\/p>\n

You can talk that talk after becoming just the second player in the history of baseball<\/a> (Reggie Jackson) to win a World Series MVP with two different teams. Two others have multiple World Series MVPs, Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson. Jackson, Koufax and Gibson are all in the Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know what else to say about the man,\u201d Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said after the World Series. \u201cHe\u2019s just incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n

10. Dad strength incoming?<\/p>\n

Just before the 2025 season, Seager and his wife Madisyn announced that she was pregnant with their first child<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Then, several weeks later, the Seagers posted the video of the baby\u2019s gender reveal where the couple found out their first child was going to be … (drumroll, please) … a boy! <\/p>\n
