{"id":80162,"date":"2025-06-05T02:24:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-05T02:24:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/80162\/"},"modified":"2025-06-05T02:24:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T02:24:09","slug":"mlb-optimistic-trop-will-be-ready-for-or-near-26-opener","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/80162\/","title":{"rendered":"MLB \u2018optimistic\u2019 Trop will be ready for, or near, \u201826 opener"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">TAMPA \u2014 Repairs to Tropicana Field are \u201cmoving along,\u201d and Major League Baseball officials \u201cremain optimistic\u201d work will be completed in time for the Rays to return for the 2026 season, commissioner Rob Manfred said Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">But Manfred did acknowledge two caveats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">One is exactly when the stadium will be ready to host a game, as Manfred said they are expecting \u201ceither for opening day or very shortly thereafter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">The league can address that issue by scheduling the Rays to open the season on the road, perhaps on an extended trip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">The other point Manfred made is one all Tampa Bay area residents have to consider regarding summer plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">\u201cObviously, the big contingency is what happens with hurricane season, right?\u201d Manfred said at the quarterly owners meeting in New York. \u201cThere\u2019s not much you can do about that other than keep your fingers crossed. But we are hopeful that we\u2019ll get it ready for opening day 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">The repairs are being done by the City of St. Petersburg, which in April <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/sports\/rays\/2025\/04\/03\/tropicana-field-roof-vote-rays-st-petersburg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/sports\/rays\/2025\/04\/03\/tropicana-field-roof-vote-rays-st-petersburg\/\">approved spending $22.5 million on a new roof<\/a>, which has been ordered. Prep work will start in mid-June, with installation in August. The City Council will vote Thursday on whether to spend about $5 million for a series of other expected repairs and expenses. The total cost of the project, some of which will be covered by insurance, is projected to be about $56 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">The Rays are committed to play at the Trop through 2028, as their agreement was extended a year by playing this season at Steinbrenner Field due to the damage from Hurricane Milton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">Manfred has said repeatedly MLB wants the team to remain in the Tampa Bay area. He didn\u2019t have much to offer Wednesday about the Rays\u2019 extended future, speculation about a potential sale or new stadium possibilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">\u201cIt\u2019s clear they\u2019re going to honor their lease through \u201928,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t really have anything to add beyond that right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travis Jankowski a free agent<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Travis Jankowski celebrates after a walkoff hit against the Brewers May 10 in Tampa. [\u00a0CHRIS O&#8217;MEARA  |  AP\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">After being acquired from the White Sox\u2019s Triple-A team in late April, Travis Jankowski filled in well for two-plus weeks when the Rays were short on healthy outfielders until getting hurt himself in mid-May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">With the Rays roster now restocked and his sore groin healed, Jankowski was placed on and passed through outright waivers.
