Fans and executives alike have wondered whether the San Diego Padres<\/a>\u2018 contention window has come to an end. The Friars have been in the most prosperous era of franchise history recently. They\u2019ve made the playoffs in four of the last six years, and have had winning records in four consecutive seasons. With their win on Monday night, the Padres secured their fifth consecutive winning record. It\u2019s the first time in franchise history that they have done so. They\u2019ve made the postseason in back-to-back seasons (2024-25). If they do so in 2026, it will also be the first time in franchise history they\u2019ve achieved a playoff spot in three consecutive years.<\/p>\n

A Lopsided First Half<\/p>\n

The Padres struggled mightily to be consistent in the first half of the season. Their starting pitching was electric when their offense couldn\u2019t hit. Then their offense would rake but their pitching would fail them. It was difficult to find any level of consistency with the Friars through that first half. That being said, San Diego was also winning games they had no business winning. They had several walk-off wins in the first few months, but they all felt somewhat fraudulent. The Padres never quite found their stride, failing to get in a groove as a team. <\/p>\n

Most of those problems were due to poor production from the stars on the San Diego roster. The Padres have plenty of guaranteed dollars tied up in long-term contracts. Their star quartet of Xander Bogaerts, Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill and Fernando Tatis Jr. stumbled to open the year. Bogaerts still hasn\u2019t quite turned things around, Machado was hitting below .200 for the first half of the season, Merrill was striking out at a massive clip and Tatis didn\u2019t hit a home run until late May. The Friars desperately needed to turn things around. <\/p>\n

Going On a Tear<\/p>\n

That lack of production led San Diego to drop below .500 prior to the All-Star break. The Friars raised their winning percentage back to .500 at the All-Star break, but the team didn\u2019t have much momentum heading into the de facto second half of the season. Since then, however, the Padres have raised the bar immensely. San Diego has gone on a blistering stretch of wins. Since the All-Star Game, the Friars have gone 34-20, at one point winning 21 of 28 games. The club is now closer to hosting playoff games at Petco Park than being out of the postseason. <\/p>\n

Entering play on Tuesday, the Padres own the final playoff spot in the National League. They\u2019re 2.5 games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks<\/a> and 1.5 games behind the Chicago Cubs<\/a> and Philadelphia Phillies<\/a>. With the way that the latter two teams are playing, it\u2019s completely possible that San Diego catches them and hosts the Wild Card series in Petco Park. The Padres are winners of eight straight games. They recently swept back-to-back series for the third time this season and have beaten the New York Yankees<\/a>, Washington Nationals<\/a> and San Francisco Giants<\/a>. The Giants were an opponent the Padres should have beaten (and did), but the Yanks and Nationals have juggernaut offenses. San Diego managed to do quite well against both of those teams.<\/p>\n

Instead, it was San Francisco that gave them trouble. The Padres swept that series solely on the strength of their superior offense. San Diego\u2019s pitching staff surrendered 15 runs despite their starters pitching quite well. The bullpen almost failed to hold their leads even though the Friars scoring 20 runs in the three-game set. The same trend occurred on Monday night in the series opener versus the Colorado Rockies<\/a>. The Padres scored eight runs in the hitter-friendly environs of Coors Field. But the pitching staff allowed Colorado to score seven, eking out the win over the Rox. <\/p>\n

With the Padres just 2.5 games ahead of Arizona, they\u2019ll need to keep that lead or pad it in order to have a decent lead over the Dbacks heading into the final weekend of the regular season. San Diego and Arizona will face off for the final series of the 2026 season. It\u2019s looking more and more like that series may not matter as much as it seems. Either team would need a four-game lead heading into the series in order to ensure a playoff spot. Currently, the only team to be in a position to do that is San Diego. Arizona has done well recently, going 6-4 in their last 10 games. But San Diego, with their eight-game win streak, has gone a ridiculous 9-1. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s always possible that San Diego goes back on the struggle bus and fails to secure a playoff spot. The way they\u2019re playing right now, though, it\u2019s very difficult to imagine the Friars missing the playoffs. If Arizona manages to storm back somehow, it won\u2019t be all that incredible. After all, the Dbacks did just manage to walk off the Miami Marlins in their series opener on Monday night. Even still, it\u2019ll be difficult for either team to gain enough of a competitive edge to make that final series irrelevant. As things stand, it seems likely that the two will face off in what will essentially be an extra round of the postseason.
