The Clairemont branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego has a new name:<\/p>\n
San Diego Padres branch.<\/p>\n
The Padres, in partnership with pitcher Yu Darvish, announced a \u201ctransformational gift\u201d to the nonprofit Saturday night. It is one of the largest contributions in the organization\u2019s history, according to the team, and is designated as a Peter Seidler Legacy Fund Project. Darvish also made a significant financial contribution, according to a Padres representative.<\/p>\n
It is the first Legacy Project with Kwanza Jones and Jos\u00e9 E. Feliciano as Padres owners.<\/p>\n
The money will fund improvements to the building, which opened in 1961 and served nearly 3,500 young people last year, 65% of whom came from low-income households.<\/p>\n
The project builds on the Padres\u2019 ongoing commitment to improving the quality of life in underserved neighborhoods and supporting the development of healthier, more educated and empowered communities across the region, according to the team.<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing all in for San Diego means being all in for its young people,\u201d said Feliciano and Jones in a joint statement. \u201cYoung people represent possibility. Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego create opportunity. When possibility meets opportunity, lives can change and entire communities can grow stronger. We\u2019re proud to build on Peter Seidler\u2019s legacy alongside Yu by investing in what\u2019s possible for young San Diegans.\u201d<\/p>\n
The upgrades, expected to take place over the next year, include a Padres-branded field, air conditioning, facility improvements and new technology,\u00a0as well as new programming.<\/p>\n
\u201cThanks to this remarkable investment, we will be able to enhance our facilities, elevate our programming, and create an environment where children can discover their potential, build confidence, and succeed,\u201d said Michelle Malin, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego.<\/p>\n
Since arriving in San Diego in 2021, Darvish has invested both time and money in the community, supporting projects with organizations including Monarch School and Ronald McDonald House of San Diego.<\/p>\n
