One, however, could argue that no one brought more flare to the mound than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/fernajo02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-09-24_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jos\u00e9 Fern\u00e1ndez<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe 2013 National League Rookie of the Year and a two-time All-Star, the world said goodbye to Fern\u00e1ndez on this day 10 years ago. Fern\u00e1ndez and two others died in a boating crash in the early morning hours of Sept. 25, 2016.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFern\u00e1ndez was piloting his boat that struck a jetty at Miami Beach before dawn. Investigations later determined that Fern\u00e1ndez was going 65 miles per hour while under the influence of drugs. The impact killed the 24-year-old Fern\u00e1ndez and both passengers onboard \u2013 27-year-old Emilio Macias and 25-year-old Eduardo Rivero.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe tragedy struck the South Florida community as well as the Miami Marlins and has since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcmiami.com\/news\/sports\/a-complicated-legacy-the-death-of-jose-fernandez-five-years-later\/2559164\/\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">complicated the legacy of a blossoming young talent<\/a>. In addition to his teammates and family, Fern\u00e1ndez left behind a daughter who had yet to be born. Fern\u00e1ndez and his pregnant girlfriend had announced that they were expecting their first child just days prior to the fatal crash.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhile Fern\u00e1ndez\u2019s story is certainly a tragic tale and by all accounts, could have been avoided, his efforts as a pitcher were a sight to behold. At 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds with a devastating breaking ball, Fern\u00e1ndez went 38-17 over four seasons in the big leagues while posting a career 2.58 ERA.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFern\u00e1ndez continues to hold Miami single-season records for fewest hits allowed per nine innings and strikeouts. The club\u2019s career leader in win percentage, Fern\u00e1ndez also ranks in the top 10 in club history in wins, strikeouts and complete games.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tA Cuban exile, Fern\u00e1ndez left fans with great memories over a short period of time. He died much too young.
