As awful as the San Francisco Giants<\/a> were on the field, the biggest story of the season was four pitchers protesting<\/a> the team\u2019s Pride Night in mid-June. And more than 3.5 months later, the team still isn\u2019t sure how to handle the situation going forward.<\/p>\n The Giants held a season-ending press conference<\/a> on Tuesday after the highly disappointing season. After the press conference,\u00a0SFGATE asked the Giants if the team intends to continue wearing the rainbow-colored \u201cSF\u201d hats to represent the LGBTQ+ community at their Pride Night next year and into the future. The Giants declined to answer the question.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n The entire debacle started on June 12, when the team held their annual Pride Night. Three pitchers \u2014 Landon Roupp, JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker \u2014 wrote a Bible verse on their rainbow-colored hats, leading to an MLB reprimand, while a fourth wore the standard-issue orange logo hat instead of the Pride Night version.<\/p>\n The protest moves sparked an entire week of backlash, from both Giants fans accusing the team<\/a> of tolerating homophobia in one of the nation\u2019s premier cities for LGBTQ+ representation and some conservative Christians, who argued MLB\u2019s warning to the players amounted to<\/a> religious discrimination.\u00a0<\/p>\n MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred put the blame<\/a> for the issue on the Giants multiple times<\/a> for \u201cinadequate and not clear\u201d communication with the players. In a letter to<\/a> Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, a Republican, Manfred explained that an\u00a0MLB policy in 2023 banned teams from wearing special uniforms, hats or equipment \u201cexcept under very narrow circumstances,\u201d but that the Giants and Dodgers requested their use of rainbow-colored logo hats to be \u201cgrandfathered\u201d in.<\/p>\n The Giants mostly refused to address the topic in the immediate aftermath of Manfred\u2019s blame. Both Buster Posey,<\/a>\u00a0the president of baseball operations, and CEO Larry Baer did not take questions in media appearances<\/a> during the firestorm. During the team\u2019s season-ending press conference on Tuesday, both Posey and manager Tony Vitello were asked about what steps they would take to avoid repeating all of the mistakes they made around Pride Night this year.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n \u201cI think anytime you have a situation like that, it\u2019s always an opportunity to learn,\u201d Posey said. \u201cI think that\u2019s the steps we take as you look back on that, is you reflect and you say, \u2018What could have been done differently?\u2019 And try to learn from that and move on.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Vitello said that, both with this specific question and with other topics that were asked, \u201ccommunication needs to be at the highest level possible,\u201d and he admitted it took him awhile to get to know all of the people involved in day-to-day operations at the big leagues.<\/p>\n \u201cI think towards the end of the year, even though the outcomes weren\u2019t what we wanted, whether it was veteran guys, younger guys, again support staff, I think communication was at a much higher level,\u201d Vitello said. \u201cAnd there was a much better understanding of what\u2019s going on in different areas and how that needs to be tied together.\u201d<\/p>\n There is a chance MLB could remove the Giants and Dodgers\u2019 exemption to their uniform policy this offseason. The collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with the players association expires on Dec. 1, and the topic of the Pride hats making national news headlines this summer certainly makes it an item that could be addressed by the league in the CBA.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n The Giants were the first MLB team to wear the rainbow-colored hats on the field back in 2021 and expressed immense pride in doing so at the time. The team has a long history of honoring the LGBTQ+ community, including hosting an \u201cUntil There\u2019s A Cure Day<\/a>\u201d to raise money for those impacted by HIV\/AIDS as far back as 1994.<\/p>\n None of that history has stopped fans from being upset at how the team handled this summer\u2019s saga. In his annual<\/a> end-of-season letter to fans that the team sent out on Tuesday<\/a>, Baer seemed to indirectly acknowledge the fury.<\/p>\n \u201cWe know we don\u2019t always get everything right,\u201d Baer wrote. \u201cThere are moments when we fall short and lessons we need to carry forward to make us better. But at our core, we care about our people and our community.
