{"id":821326,"date":"2026-10-04T11:36:18","date_gmt":"2026-10-04T11:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/821326\/"},"modified":"2026-10-04T11:36:18","modified_gmt":"2026-10-04T11:36:18","slug":"chicago-white-sox-grant-taylors-4-inning-save-extends-run","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/821326\/","title":{"rendered":"Chicago White Sox: Grant Taylor&#8217;s 4-inning save extends run"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CLEVELAND \u2014 Grant Taylor headed back to the dugout after the eighth inning, having just completed his third scoreless frame during Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Saturday against the Cleveland Guardians.<\/p>\n<p>The right-hander knew there was a chance he would return for the ninth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that when I come in the dugout and (manager) Will (Venable) doesn\u2019t tell me that I\u2019m done immediately that there\u2019s a possibility,\u201d Taylor said after the game. \u201cI had my whole setup in the tunnel. I just kind of beelined for it. I wasn\u2019t going to let him tell me he changed his mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Pitching coach) Zach Bove came down and gave me a look (that) at this point of the year I know kind of means, \u2018How (do) you feel, what you got?\u2019 And I gave him a nod. He went back, talked to Will. They came back and told me I was going out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/10\/03\/alds-grant-taylor-chicago-white-sox-bullpen\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Column: Grant Taylor and the Chicago White Sox relievers keep doing \u2018our little thing\u2019 in Game 1 win<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Taylor struck out the side in the ninth, wrapping up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/10\/03\/chicago-white-sox-alds-game-1-score\/?utm_campaign=mrf-bluesky-chicagotribune.com&amp;utm_source=bluesky&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;mrfcid=202610036ac1617d3b19ff64c191a62b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the 3-0 win<\/a>. He allowed two hits and struck out six while collecting the remarkable four-inning save.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the best I\u2019ve probably ever seen anyone pitch,\u201d catcher Kyle Teel said. \u201cThat was just unbelievable, the way he hit his spots, the amount of movement on his pitches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MLBStats\/status\/2106478578409849088\" rel=\"nofollow\">According to MLB.com\u2019s Sarah Langs<\/a>, Taylor became the sixth pitcher to record a four-or-more-inning save in the postseason since saves became an official stat in 1969 \u2014 the first since Lance McCullers Jr. in Game 7 of the 2017 ALCS.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor\u2019s six strikeouts were tied for the most in a postseason relief appearance with no walks in major-league history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what else to say about him,\u201d Venable said. \u201cHe\u2019s a beast out there. He wants the ball. His stuff is really good. I thought he actually got better as that outing went on. So some incredible stuff from Grant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taylor entered in the sixth with the Sox leading 2-0. The Guardians saw a rally fizzle when Steven Kwan grounded into an inning-ending double play.\u00a0Taylor had a 1-2-3 eighth inning. And then came back for the ninth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy job when I come in is to give that one inning everything I\u2019ve got and then come in the dugout and possibly go out for another,\u201d Taylor said. \u201cSo I\u2019m trying to give everything I can to that one pitch and that one inning. And if I have more in the tank for multiples, then good for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taylor struck out Angel Mart\u00ednez, Lowe and Bazzana to give the Sox a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series. Game 2 is at 4 p.m. Monday at Progressive Field.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday was Taylor\u2019s second appearance of the postseason. And both have been impressive. He allowed one run (unearned), on two hits with five strikeouts and one walk in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/09\/29\/al-wild-card-game-1-white-sox-astros\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tuesday\u2019s 6-3 win against the Astros<\/a> in Game 1 of the AL wild-card series, throwing 54 pitches.<\/p>\n<p>And he delivered when called again on Saturday with the 42-pitch performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing able to go out for four ups, haven\u2019t done that since 2024,\u201d Taylor said. \u201cSo being able to do that and help the guys get the win is a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/10\/03\/game-1-photos-chicago-white-sox-at-cleveland-guardians-in-al-division-series\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Photos: Chicago White Sox beat Cleveland Guardians 3-0 in Game 1 of ALDS<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Taylor didn\u2019t know he was going to go four innings when he went to the mound in the sixth. But he entered with a close out mentality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy job at this point coming into the sixth inning is to go as deep as they let me and hand it off to the next guy in a winning situation,\u201d Taylor said.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor gave credit to the pitchers that came before him. The group combined for a three-hitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was unbelievable,\u201d Taylor said. \u201cWe\u2019ve kind of done that the whole year of being able to hand it off to the next guy. (Opener) Hagen (Smith) being able to go out and give us three strong and (Bryan Hudson) being able to come in and close the door (in the third inning).<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Anthony) Kay and the other guys pitching some positions that aren\u2019t super familiar, but being able to do that in the postseason was unbelievable. And you also had that on the defense as well, pretty big double play behind me.
