That&#8217;s an honor the pitcher known as \u201cThe Rocket\u201d has yet to receive because of suspicions he used steroids during a 24-year career that featured time with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/mlb\/boston-red-sox-team\" class=\"entity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boston Red Sox<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/mlb\/toronto-blue-jays-team\" class=\"entity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto Blue Jays<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/mlb\/new-york-yankees-team\" class=\"entity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Yankees<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/mlb\/houston-astros-team\" class=\"entity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Houston Astros<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"true\" data-v-baabd5ed=\"\">\u201cWe\u2019re giving him the Presidential Medal of Freedom,\u201d Trump said. \u201cAnd, along with the Congressional Medal of Honor, it\u2019s the highest award bestowed upon anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"true\" data-v-baabd5ed=\"\">The president continued: \u201cHe&#8217;ll be in the Hall of Fame someday, but he deserves it. One of the greatest athletes, and maybe the greatest pitcher, of all time.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"true\" data-v-baabd5ed=\"\">He added that the medal \u201cis a big step up from the Hall of Fame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"true\" data-v-baabd5ed=\"\">Trump has given the medal to various athletes during his two terms in the White House, including golfing legend Tiger Woods, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, famed Yankees closer Mariano Rivera and Lou Holtz, former coach of Notre Dame football. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"true\" data-v-baabd5ed=\"\">He&#8217;s bestowed the same honor on Elvis Presley posthumously and on Rush Limbaugh the year before the conservative radio host died. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"true\" data-v-baabd5ed=\"\">Wednesday&#8217;s surprise revelation came near the end of a Trump speech that lasted more than 100 minutes, and with the crowd having lost some of its enthusiasm. Clemens was attending the event, and the president called him to the stage, where the retired right-hander offered, \u201cWell, I\u2019m stunned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"true\" data-v-baabd5ed=\"\">\u201cThis supersedes anything that obviously I&#8217;ve done in my playing career,\u201d Clemens said. \u201cAnd to get it from this man, this president, there wouldn\u2019t be another president I\u2019d want to get it from.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"true\" data-v-baabd5ed=\"\">Clemens, who was raised in Houston, said he was honored that the announcement came in Texas and added of Trump: \u201cYou\u2019re talking about a winner. That\u2019s a winner right there.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"true\" data-v-baabd5ed=\"\">Clemens, like slugger Barry Bonds and many other stars widely suspected of using performance-enhancing drugs, was repeatedly rejected by baseball writers in his bid for the Hall of Fame. There are other avenues where Clemens and others could eventually make it, but the road is not easy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"true\" data-v-baabd5ed=\"\">Clemens isn&#8217;t the first star baseball player Trump has made a Hall of Fame case for.
