TAMPA – With one starter on the IL<\/a> and another demoted to Triple-A<\/a> as of Thursday, the Rangers<\/a> face a pitching predicament. <\/p>\n

They must either toss aside the plan to use a series of off days for much-needed extra rest for their healthy starters or use their imagination to craft a starter from the bullpen or the minors for at least one turn. For the moment, the Rangers are leaning towards imagineering. <\/p>\n

Manager Bruce Bochy indicated Thursday he\u2019d like to preserve two extra days of rest for Tyler Mahle<\/a>, who started Tuesday at Tampa Bay and could pitch Sunday on normal rest. But the Rangers want to keep as many starters on the extra rest program after a long, arduous stretch. It would mean using either a bullpen arm such as Caleb Boushley or Cole Winn to start the series finale at Washington and preserving Mahle for Tuesday\u2019s game at Minnesota. <\/p>\n

Under those circumstances, Mahle would have six days of rest and would be followed by Jack Leiter<\/a> and Patrick Corbin, both pitching on five days of rest. The next decision the Rangers would have to make would come next Friday when they open a homestand. That\u2019s the first day Nathan Eovaldi<\/a> is eligible to return from the injured list. If he does, then Jacob deGrom<\/a>, scheduled to start Saturday in Washington, would have a six day break between starts. If Eovaldi isn\u2019t ready, the Rangers could still start deGrom on five days\u2019 rest. <\/p>\n

With 159 innings in May, the Rangers\u2019 starting rotation had the fourth-heaviest workload in the majors. The Rangers have been hoping to use a five-week stretch that began last Thursday during which they have six off days to get the rotation some breathing room. That stretch leads up to the week prior to the All-Star break, at which time the pitchers would be afforded another extra stretch of rest.<\/p>\n

Martin, who turned 39 on Monday, had been on the injured list with right shoulder fatigue since May 19.<\/p>\n
