The baseball world has lost one of its respected behind-the-scenes figures following the death of Guy Conti, the longtime New York Mets instructor whose influence helped shape the career of Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez.

Conti died on Tuesday, October 13, aged 84, after battling a prolonged illness. His passing was confirmed by former Mets public relations director Jay Horwitz, who shared an emotional tribute to his longtime colleague.

“We lost a good one today,” Horwitz wrote on X. “Guy Conti, our former bullpen coach and special adviser, passed away after a lengthy illness.”

Horwitz also reflected on Conti’s relationships throughout baseball, adding: “Guy was a friend of Sandy Koufax and beloved by Pedro Martinez. No one had more stories than Guy. His knowledge reached people for decades. Miss you my friend.”

What was Guy Conti’s cause of death?

Conti’s death followed a lengthy illness, but neither his family nor those confirming his passing have publicly identified the specific medical condition involved.

The veteran coach spent decades working in professional baseball, developing a reputation for his knowledge of pitching and his commitment to helping players improve.

He joined the Mets organization in 1999, initially holding positions in the minor leagues before becoming the club’s bullpen coach under manager Willie Randolph.

Conti served in that role from 2005 through 2008, subsequently continuing his involvement with the franchise through advisory, instructional and rehabilitation responsibilities.

His dedication was particularly evident during spring training, where colleagues remembered him as someone who consistently worked longer hours than those around him.

“Guy was the first one to arrive at camp every morning and the last one to leave,” Horwitz recalled.

Conti’s remarkable relationship with Pedro Martinez

Although Conti spent years with the Mets, his most celebrated contribution came earlier during his time working for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

After the organization signed Ramon Martinez, Conti traveled to the Dominican Republic to evaluate his younger brother Pedro, who would eventually become one of baseball’s greatest pitchers.

Conti initially struggled to identify the relatively undersized prospect among the players assembled for his visit, but everything changed when Martinez began throwing.

“All of a sudden when Pedro got on the mound and started throwing the ball, it just exploded,” Conti told the New York Post in 2015.

“He just jumped off the page after that and, ‘Oh my goodness, this must be him.’ And it was history from that point.”

Conti helped Martinez develop his changeup, which became one of his most devastating pitches, while also encouraging him to learn English through lessons with the coach’s wife.

Their relationship became so meaningful that Martinez affectionately referred to Conti as his “white daddy,” acknowledging the guidance he received during his early professional years.

Former Mets coach leaves lasting baseball legacy

Conti’s coaching career extended beyond MLB, including nine seasons leading the basketball program at Edinboro State College before moving into professional baseball.

He worked with the Pittsburgh Pirates before joining the Dodgers in 1986, eventually developing extensive experience in scouting, coaching and player rehabilitation.

His reunion with Martinez in New York provided another memorable chapter in a career defined by personal relationships as much as professional achievements.

While the precise cause of Conti’s death remains undisclosed, the tributes following his passing underline the lasting influence he had on generations of players.

The baseball world has lost one of its respected behind-the-scenes figures following the death of Guy Conti, the…

[2396
5,101,4,1690,61,2548,4203
post-828588","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-york-mets","tag-baseball","tag-mets","tag-mlb","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-mets","tag-newyork","tag-newyorkmets
["GET
