It was only the third time in franchise history the White Sox had picked first overall, and within days the two sides agreed to a record $10.35 million signing bonus. In Americus, where the city’s 1938 wooden ballpark was named one of the Georgia Trust’s 2026 Places in Peril, a pick like that gets argued over the same way a Friday night score does.

Most of us will never sit in a real draft room. The closest thing the average fan gets is fantasy baseball, where draft day is the main event of the year, and that is where all that armchair scouting turns into practice. An MLB mock draft simulator lets you draft from any slot against computer managers as many times as you like, using your own league’s roster and scoring settings, so you can see how quickly the good catchers disappear or what your team looks like if you take an ace with your first pick.

Playing scout before the picks are real

The real draft has its own version of that rehearsal. For months before July, national outlets ran mock after mock with Cholowsky at the top, and the White Sox did nothing to surprise anyone. He even sent Major League Baseball a video ahead of time showing the correct pronunciation of his last name, which tells you how settled the No. 1 spot was.

That is part of why rehearsals like these are fun for ordinary fans. They let you test your judgment before anyone can prove you wrong. Pick a player too early in a mock and nothing happens except a lesson. Do it in your actual league in March and you live with it until September.

The fantasy version teaches things a printed ranking sheet never will. You learn which positions run out fast and where the bargains tend to show up in the middle rounds. You also learn your own habits, like the way some of us reach for a familiar Braves name a round or two earlier than we should.

A town with baseball in its bones

Fans around here come by that interest honestly. Thomas L. Bell Memorial Ballpark opened in 1938 as a Works Progress Administration project, named for the mayor who pushed to build it. For decades it hosted professional and semiprofessional teams before becoming the home field for Americus High School baseball, and it remains one of only a handful of historic wooden ballparks still standing in Georgia.

Its future is the worrying part. The high school campus around it has been abandoned, and no plan has been announced for the stadium once athletic programs move. That is why the Georgia Trust put it on this year’s list.

The game itself is in good hands locally, though. Georgia Southwestern’s Hurricanes play Division II baseball in the Peach Belt Conference, and the Sumter County Panthers and Southland Academy both field high school teams every spring. Every one of those players grew up watching the same draft coverage everybody else did, and a few of them have probably run a mock or two with their own names penciled in somewhere.

October hands everyone homework

Right now, of course, most attention in Sumter County is pointed north toward Atlanta. The Braves finished 94 and 68 as the National League’s No. 3 seed and knocked out Philadelphia in a winner take all Game 3 of the Wild Card Series. On Sunday night they evened their Division Series with the Dodgers at a game apiece with a 3 to 2 win in Los Angeles. Michael Harris II tripled and scored the go ahead run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning, and the series now shifts to Truist Park for Game 3 on Tuesday with Chris Sale lined up to start.

For fantasy players, October is also when next season quietly begins. A few sites have already published early predictions for the first round of 2027 drafts, and dynasty leagues will hold their first year player drafts over the winter, with Cholowsky an obvious name near the top of those boards. He made his professional debut on Aug. 4 with the White Sox’s High A affiliate in North Carolina, so his path to Chicago is just getting started.

Your offseason scouting report

If you want to get a jump on next spring, a few habits help. Run a mock or two from a draft slot you hate, since that is the one you will probably end up with. Set the scoring to match your real league, not the default. Keep notes on which players kept sliding further than you expected. Then compare your board in January with the one you build in March, after spring training news starts to shake things up.

And if you need a reminder of why any of this matters, take a drive past Bell Ballpark before its future is decided. Long before anyone ran a draft on a phone, people in this town were filling those wooden seats to watch the next prospect come through.

Three Months After Cholowsky Went No. 1, Americus Baseball Fans Are Running Mock Drafts of Their Own Published…

[2276
5,2291,4,1586
post-834051","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-mlb-draft","tag-baseball","tag-major-league-baseball-draft","tag-mlb","tag-mlb-draft
["GET
