At the time, it seemed like a minor trade, as Megill had posted a poor 4.80 ERA over 45 innings with Minnesota in 2022. The Twins claimed him off waivers from the Chicago Cubs in the 2021-22 offseason, so many around the league clearly didn’t view him as a long-term big leaguer.

However, Megill has proved the Twins wrong in their decision to give up on him. After posting a solid 3.63 ERA over 34 2/3 innings with Milwaukee in 2023, Megill became the team’s primary closer in 2024 and still holds the role. The whole baseball world saw him collect the save in Game 1 of the World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night in Milwaukee.

Since the start of the 2024 season, Megill has collected 81 saves and 179 strikeouts while posting a 2.61 ERA over 155 regular-season innings. In the playoffs, the right-hander has allowed just two runs over 14 innings while striking out 19 and collecting five saves.

The Twins gave MLB’s best team their lockdown closer. Minnesota must’ve received a great player in return, right?

Not really. To complete the 2023 trade, Milwaukee sent Minnesota right-handed pitcher Taylor Floyd, the Brewers’ 10th-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft. Floyd, 28, has never pitched in the majors and is no longer with the Twins organization.

Looking at Twins’ return from Trevor Megill trade with Brewers

The Seattle Mariners acquired Floyd from the Twins in the Triple-A phase of the 2024 Rule 5 Draft. He elected free agency after the 2025 season and then signed a minor-league deal with the Cincinnati Reds. He spent this past season with the Reds’ Double-A affiliate.

Floyd has never pitched above the Double-A level. Over his minor-league career, Floyd has posted a 4.37 ERA over 377 innings while striking out 428. He is nearing 30, so if he makes the majors, he will be much older than the average rookie.

At this point, Floyd might be considering retirement. He could also try to sign a deal with a foreign team.

Again, at the time, moving Megill didn’t seem like a bad idea. The Cubs also didn’t want Megill, so the Twins weren’t the only team that thought he didn’t have what it takes to be an impact bullpen arm. Regardless, the Twins have to regret the move now that he is closing for the Brewers in the World Series.

Add us as a preferred source on GoogleFollow

On April 30, 2023, the Minnesota Twins traded right-hander Trevor Megill to the Milwaukee Brewers for cash and…

[2399
5,138,24,4245,161,4
post-837149","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-chicago-cubs","tag-baseball","tag-chicago","tag-chicago-cubs","tag-chicagocubs","tag-cubs","tag-mlb
["GET
