The Boston Red Sox <\/a>desperately need to improve their starting rotation if they want to make their first playoff appearance since 2021.<\/p>\n

Garrett Crochet has been lights-out as the team\u2019s unquestioned ace. However, a slew of injuries to Kutter Crawford and Tanner Houck immediately knocked Boston\u2019s pitching pedigree down a peg.<\/p>\n

Combine that with putrid performances from Lucas Giolito (6.42 ERA) and a lack of consistency on the backend, Boston should leave no stone unturned to find another credible arm to anchor their starting staff.<\/p>\n

While not an exact match, R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports <\/a>believes Miami Marlins left-handed starter Ryan Weathers is a potential fit for the Red Sox at this year\u2019s trade deadline.<\/p>\n

Characterizing Weathers as \u201cone of the deadline’s biggest wild cards,\u201d Anderson points to his lack of proven track record that could make him a worthy, albeit risky, trade target. Weathers has four starts under his belt this season.<\/p>\n

Across 21.2 innings, he has a 2.49 ERA and 22 strikeouts. In the chaos that is the 23-27 Marlins, Weathers is one of the few bright spots. In theory, adding him to the backend of Boston\u2019s rotation would provide stability, although the potential acquisition does not come without its downside.<\/p>\n

Weathers is unproven. He has never thrown more than 94 innings and has not made more than 16 starts since his rookie season in 2021. However, he will not be arbitration-eligible until after the season, giving Boston four years of team control remaining.<\/p>\n

Weathers is not an ace, but with a 1.15 ERA and 0.89 WHIP across 15.2 innings against the American League East, he can provide Boston with valuable innings and become the next under-the-radar deadline move.<\/p>\n
