{"id":90545,"date":"2025-06-09T09:37:27","date_gmt":"2025-06-09T09:37:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/90545\/"},"modified":"2025-06-09T09:37:27","modified_gmt":"2025-06-09T09:37:27","slug":"former-st-johns-pitcher-ian-seymour-called-up-to-the-tampa-bay-rays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/90545\/","title":{"rendered":"Former St. John&#8217;s pitcher Ian Seymour called up to the Tampa Bay Rays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WORCESTER \u2014 While Roman Anthony\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegram.com\/story\/sports\/mlb\/woosox\/2025\/06\/07\/roman-anthony-home-run-grand-slam-worcester-red-sox-polar-park\/84098377007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">majestic 495-foot grand slam<\/a> made the rounds late Saturday night, news of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegram.com\/story\/sports\/mlb\/woosox\/2025\/05\/23\/ian-seymour-durham-bulls-tampa-bay-rays-st-johns-baseball\/83803242007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ian Seymour<\/a>\u2019s call up to the big leagues circled around\u00a0Polar Park \u2014 and the Canal District \u2014 the morning after.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Seymour, a former standout pitcher at St. John\u2019s High School, was promoted from Triple-A Durham to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sportsdata.usatoday.com\/baseball\/mlb\/teams\/tampa-bay-rays\/254\" data-autotag=\"e9a88456-f8c5-40b7-9742-6ea3ee6a611a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tampa Bay Rays<\/a>\u2019 active roster Sunday morning ahead of their game at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Seymour wasn&#8217;t called on in Sunday&#8217;s game against Miami, but the Rays head to Boston for a three-game series starting Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s such a great kid from such a great family,\u201d former St. John\u2019s baseball coach Charlie Eppinger told the T&amp;G Sunday. \u201cIf you ever met him, you couldn\u2019t not root for him.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Seymour, a 26-year-old whose family lives in Westborough, led the International League with 84 strikeouts this season and possessed a 2.95 ERA across 61 innings. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A second-round pick of the Rays in 2020,\u00a0Seymour\u00a0burst onto the professional baseball scene a year later before\u00a0Tommy John surgery stalled his ascension in 2022. The 6-foot, 215-pound lefty returned to the mound in 2023 before finding his form again last year and being named the Rays\u2019 Minor League Pitcher of the Year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the Rays added Seymour to their 40-man roster,\u00a0the 2017 St. John\u2019s grad impressed in 12 appearances for the Durham Bulls this spring before getting the call to join Tampa Bay for its series finale against the Florida Marlins.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIan Seymour is a guy who made a great impression in spring training,\u201d Rays manager Kevin Cash told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/ian-seymour-rays-callup\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Adam Berry of MLB.com<\/a> on Sunday. \u201cHe\u2019s done a lot of good things in Durham.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The news of Seymour\u2019s promotion comes just 16 days after he made his first Triple-A start at Polar Park in a game against the WooSox.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Seymour tossed a season-high 98 pitches, allowed four hits, three runs and struck out eight and left the game with his team leading, 4-3, over Worcester on May 23.\u00a0It was a memorable homecoming for the talented Tampa tosser, who pitched in front of family and friends at the home of the WooSox.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t really put into words how special that is,\u201d Seymour told the T&amp;G postgame from the concourse section at Polar Park. \u201cI\u2019ve definitely been looking forward to this trip since I saw it on the calendar and knew that we were coming up here.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t be more grateful for this support group, truly.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Seymour felt the same amount of support.
