The San Francisco Giants (38-28) are close to passing baseball’s Goliath. They’re just 1.5 games behind the defending-champion Los Angeles Dodgers (40-27) for first place in the NL West despite having a nearly<\/a> $100 million cheaper active (26-man) payroll, via Spotrac. Their total payroll allocations are also around $170 million less.<\/p>\n

While the Dodgers rely on superstars like designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, infielder Mookie Betts, infielder Freddie Freeman, and starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Giants are led by more unheralded players like outfielder Heliot Ramos, outfielder Jung Hoo Lee, and starting pitcher Robbie Ray. Ohtani leads the NL with 23 homers, while third baseman Matt Chapman tops San Francisco with 12.<\/p>\n

However, the Giants made an unfortunate announcement about the latter player before Tuesday’s game against the Colorado Rockies (12-53) via their social media.<\/p>\n

They placed Chapman on the 10-day Injured List (retroactive to June 9) with right hand inflammation. Additionally, they recalled Christian Koss recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.<\/p>\n

Chapman is slashing .243\/.360\/.452 with 30 RBI in 65 games this season.<\/p>\n

Fans aren’t happy about the veteran’s injury.<\/p>\n

“Nnnoooo” one said.<\/p>\n

“Brutal, one of the more underrated players in baseball,” another said. “He\u2019s the 3B version of Francisco Lindor.”<\/p>\n

“[Expletive] shoot me man,” another said.<\/p>\n

“Sorry to hear about Chapman he will be missed! But Koss the slugger is back!!” another said.<\/p>\n

Koss is slashing .273\/.338\/.453 with 56 homers and 260 RBI in 451 career minor-league games. The 27-year-old made his MLB debut this season and is slashing .219\/.275\/.266 with one homer and eight RBI in 29 contests.<\/p>\n
