The Toronto Blue Jays aim for a series sweep on Wednesday against the St. Louis Cardinals following a thrilling 10-9 victory on Tuesday. Toronto now leads the series 2-0 and looks to build on its impressive 21-10 run over its last 31 games.<\/p>\n

In Tuesday\u2019s slugfest, the Blue Jays erupted for 16 hits and saw multiple lead changes. Jos\u00e9 Berr\u00edos set the tone with 6.2 shutout innings, while Alejandro Kirk ripped a two-run homer in the seventh before delivering a single in the ninth and scoring on a wild pitch.\u00a0 Andr\u00e9s Gim\u00e9nez opened the scoring with a three-run shot in the first, and Bo Bichette went 3-for-5 with three runs scored.<\/p>\n

The Blue Jays have navigated this strong stretch without veteran starting pitcher Max Scherzer in the rotation due to right thumb inflammation.<\/p>\n

With Scherzer still on the injured list, the Blue Jays made a move on Sunday to bolster their pitching depth, calling up former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Spencer Turnbull. The veteran right-hander is expected to work out of the bullpen on Wednesday (via Keegan Matheson of MLB.com<\/a>) but does have 67 career starts, so could be used in that role as well.<\/p>\n

While Turnbull gets acclimated, good Scherzer news emerged: Triple-A Buffalo announced he is scheduled to start this Friday at Sahlen Field after a successful bullpen session.<\/p>\n

The team indicated Scherzer is expected to throw 60-65 pitches and will be evaluated again.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, MLB.com\u00a0reported that Scherzer, who signed with Toronto in February, threw a 50-pitch bullpen session against Blue Jays live hitters in Dunedin. This rehab start sets him on pace to rejoin the rotation by late June, improving a staff that has otherwise held together through strong performances from Berr\u00edos, Kevin Gausman, and others.<\/p>\n
