George Gervin has discussed the state of the NBA, his San Antonio Spurs, and what the future looks like with Wembanyama taking the spotlight instead of Curry and LeBron.
For the past decade, players like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant have spearheaded the NBA. They have done a great job of leading the league as the best players on the best teams.
But the new generation is gradually taking over. NBA legend George Gervin knows this feeling because he experienced it himself. As a former San Antonio Spurs player and now a fan, he sees Victor Wembanyama as a rising star who is probably the best representative of the future.

Gervin’s support for the Spurs has led to his appreciation of Wembanyama’s potential. Before the 2023 NBA Draft, Wembanyama was the unanimous top prospect. Even if some people had doubts, he quickly erased them by becoming the franchise’s centerpiece.
Since he has a close eye on the Spurs, it is fair for Gervin to discuss Wembanyama being the torch-bearer. Gervin thinks Wemby’s personality, morals, and game knowledge could make him the face of the NBA in two years.
“They (Spurs) got a good nucleus to put something together. You all know, just like how I know, the old era is gone. No LeBron, no Steph, no Durant. They got the young fellas now… Everybody is going to be an ex-player one day,” Gervin said on Run It Back on FanDuel TV.
Wembanyama is entering his third season in the 2025-26 campaign. This should be a massive year for him, as he is coming back from his blood clot issues. It seems that the ailment is over based on Wembanyama’s offseason adventures.
LeBron, Curry, and Durant are not getting younger
The new era of the NBA is growing past some of these legends.
It’s not like they’re having the worst years of their careers. Durant, Curry, and LeBron all ranked in the top 15 among scoring players in the 2024-25 season. But with their ages being 36, 37, and 40, respectively, they’re in the tail end of their careers.
New players are becoming the top choices for the NBA’s next face. Wembanyama is only one of those players because stars like Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Haliburton come to mind.
The long-term future is far away, but the best players of this era are already shining. Newer players are still proving themselves, but they are on a good path to success.
For Wemby to become the face of the NBA, does he need to grow his game more…or his hair? 💇♂️

Gervin was telling the truth when it comes to all players ending up retiring and stepping away from the game. James, Curry, and Durant are not there yet, but it is coming soon.
