NBA star and Texas Longhorns legend Kevin Durant could soon be returning to the Lone Star State, with both the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs emerging as preferred destinations in ongoing trade discussions with the Phoenix Suns.

Durant, 36, is entering the final year of his $54.7 million contract with the Suns. According to multiple reports, the two-time NBA champion has identified Houston and San Antonio – along with the Miami Heat – as teams he would commit to for the long haul if a trade is completed. The Suns, however, have made it clear they intend to pursue the best deal for their franchise, regardless of Durant’s preferences.

Trade negotiations have intensified as the NBA Draft approaches. The Spurs, armed with the No. 2 pick and a young core led by Victor Wembanyama, have reportedly balked at Phoenix’s initial asking price, which included the top draft selection and rookie standout Stephon Castle. Meanwhile, the Rockets, eager to accelerate their rebuild and add a proven scorer, are seen by some analysts as the “cleanest trade fit” for Durant, though Houston’s front office has been reluctant to part with key young players and future assets.

Durant’s ties to Texas run deep. He starred for the University of Texas before launching a Hall of Fame-caliber NBA career, and a return to the state would be a homecoming for one of basketball’s most decorated forwards. Both the Spurs and Rockets offer intriguing opportunities: San Antonio boasts a rising star in Wembanyama and a stockpile of draft capital, while Houston’s young roster could benefit from Durant’s veteran leadership and late-game scoring ability.

Despite Durant’s wishes, the Suns are fielding offers from as many as eight teams and have not promised to send the 15-time All-Star to one of his preferred destinations. As the NBA offseason heats up, all eyes remain on Phoenix and the Texas franchises as a potential blockbuster deal looms.

Durant, who turns 37 in September, is eligible to sign a two-year contract extension worth up to $124 million if traded.
