Welcome to the Open Thread. During the month of June, we are talking NBA Draft. As we lead up to the 2025 NBA Draft on June 25th, we will be revisiting the Spurs draft choices. Today we remember the 2018 NBA Draft.
The Spurs kicked off their 2018 campaign by drafting Lonnie Walker IV, a Spurs Way player right out of the box. The Miami Hurricane jumped into community service in his new San Antonio hometown. He had his breakout game on December 3, 2019, scoring 28 points, grabbing four rebounds, three steals and a block in a 135–133 double overtime win over the Houston Rockets.
Walker IV finished his contract with the Spurs in 2022 and joined the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency. One your with the Lakers, one with the Brooklyn Nets. He signed a year with the Celtics before being waived. Instead he joined Žalgiris Kaunas of the Lithuanian Basketball League and the EuroLeague, winning the King Mindaugas Cup on February 16, 2025. Three days later he returned to the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Spurs also chose Chimezie Metu with the 49th pick of the draft.
Metu spent two years with the Spurs before being waived. He joined the Sacramento Kings for three seasons, followed by a season split between Phoenix and Detroit. Since 2024, he has played with FC Barcelona.
