YUKON, Okla. (KOKH) — Preparations are underway for a celebration event if the Oklahoma City Thunder win the NBA Finals.

Yukon city councilors met last night to decide whether to let their police department lend a hand in a championship celebration or parade.

Yukon Police Chief John Corn also divulged some plans to city councilors. According to Chief Corn, plans started early.

“(OKCPD) Chief Bacy sent his letter out as soon as the Thunder had made the playoffs,” Chief Corn told councilors. “He did that pre-emptively so that we could get plans started and determine how many agencies would be able to offer them assistance.”

Chief Corn said meetings with other law enforcement agencies and OKCPD will likely last up until next week.

“I look at this as an honor that our police department has been invited to assist Oklahoma City in this,” said city councilor Adam Shriver. “We’ve got a good police department, and they’re well trained.”

Chief Corn said any overtime his officers incur will come out of their overtime budget. Officers will still fully staff their shifts inside Yukon city limits on the day of a victory parade or celebration event.

Law enforcement is planning for more than 600,000 people to attend festivities in downtown Oklahoma City if the Thunder win the Finals. Several hundred police officers from different agencies will be on hand.

“It’s quite elaborate planning,” Chief Corn added.

The Yukon City Council approved the plan to help out OKCPD.

Right now, there are no details about a location or date of a possible championship celebration event or parade.
