Welcome to the Open Thread. During the month of June, we are talking NBA Draft. As we lead up to the 2025 NBA Draft on June 25th, we will be revisiting the Spurs draft choices. Today we remember the 2020 NBA Draft.
The Spurs, like everyone else, had to adjust to the COVID restrictions. The 2020 NBA Draft was unique in that the NBA hopefuls watched from home. Most players expected to be drafted had a case of baseball hats with the various NBA logos on hand. They then put on the designated team’s hat on when their name was called.
The Spurs chose Devin Vassell with the 11th pick in the draft.
The former Florida Seminole just completed his fifth season with the Silver & Black. In each of the first four seasons, his stats improved. At the start of the 2023-2024 season, Vassell inked a five–year/$146M contract extension, the largest in Spurs franchise history. That season saw career averages in points, assists, and field goal percentage reflected the increase in minutes and starts.
With the 41st pick in the draft, the Spurs chose Tre Jones. Jones, 2020’s ACC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, was a great fit for San Antonio. A willing community leader off the court mirrored his willingness on court to take any role necessary. Whether he was starting or coming off the bench, Jones showed he was always ready. Last season, Jones (along with Zach Collins and Sidy Cissoko) was part of three team trade that brought De’Aaron Fox and Jordan McLaughlin to San Antonio.
The trade was considered a steal for the Spurs as they sacrificed only draft picks and bench players for a star guard in Fox.
