OKLAHOMA CITY – Indiana Pacers All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton suffered a torn right Achilles tendon in the Pacers’ NBA Finals Game 7 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, a league source confirmed to IndyStar.

ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported the news.

The Pacers formally confirmed the news with a press release on Monday evening saying that the tear was confirmed with an MRI on Monday. According to the release, Haliburton is scheduled to have surgery later Monday evening with Dr. Martin O’ Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

O’Malley, one of the most well-regarded sports surgeons in the business, also performed surgery on Pacers centers Isaiah Jackson and James Wiseman, who both tore Achilles tendons early in the season as well as the surgery on Celtics All-NBA wing Jayson Tatum, who tore an Achilles tendon in the Celtics’ Eastern Conference semifinals loss to the Knicks.

Haliburton suffered a right calf strain in Game 5 of the Finals but opted to play through it, He stumbled on a drive in the first quarter of Game 7 and had to be carried off the floor. He left the arena on crutches and his father John told ABC sideline reporter Lisa Salters it was an Achilles injury.

Such injuries typically require a recovery time of 8-10 months but can have an affect on an athlete’s performance for longer.

Haliburton had a trying season in 2024-25 including a brutal start to the year in which he shot 37.5% from the floor and 28.4% from 3-point range in the first 15 games. He rallied to average 18.6 points and 9.2 assists per game, leading the NBA in assist-to-turnover ratio and earning third-team All-NBA honors for the second straight season. During the playoffs he posted the most total assists (197) of any player and hit game-tying or game-winning shots in four thrilling comeback wins for the Pacers — one in each round — leading them to their first NBA Finals appearance since 2000 and just their second in franchise history.
