With the Washington Wizards’ season officially over, fans now have time to take stock of this season. Despite finishing dead last in the Eastern Conference, there’s a lot of reason to be proud of this team. Their future is looking quite bright with the many flashes their young stars showed.

What’s more encouraging, though, is the fact that there seems to be a plan in place for the Wizards. Wizards guard Malcolm Brodgon elaborated on this point during their most recent media availability. Brogdon said that it was nice to see that the front office knows what they want to do and is executing that plan.

“You can see the plan,” Brogdon said, per Bijan Todd. “I’ve been in places where you can’t really see the plan, it doesn’t feel organized, people don’t feel like they’re on the same page. That’s not the case here.”

The Wizards came into this season without any expectations, and the front office didn’t pretend that they were going to be competitive. They didn’t make any short-sighted moves by trading for a big star and consuming their trade capital in the process. Instead, the Wizards focused on giving their rookies valuable experience while surrounding them with capable veterans. Brodgon was brought over in the offseason, while Marcus Smart and Khris Middleton came over via trade in the middle of the season.

The bonus for the Wizards? These veterans could still potentially net them more assets if they decide to trade them. Brogdon battled injuries all season long, but he’s just two years removed from his Sixth Man of the Year win. The same goes for Middleton, who was phased out of the Bucks rotation but can still contribute to a championship team. Smart has proven to be a capable defender and playmaker for the Wizards, too.

Right now, the Wizards’ veterans are fostering a great culture for the young players on the team. It’s seemingly paid off, as the Wizards have looked great after the trade deadline despite the losses. We’ll see what the next stage of the Washington front office’s plan is at the 2025 NBA Draft.
