The deal is the first agreed this offseason for both the Washington Wizards and New Orleans Pelicans, two teams who had disappointing returns in the Draft Lottery.
The Wizards have the number six pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, with the Pelicans picking seventh.
The move is a much-needed fresh start for former Golden State Warriors star Jordan Poole, but it does not necessarily put him in a much better situation.
Both the Pelicans and Wizards struggled last season and this trade does not really change the trajectories for either team.
Charania notes that the winners could be the Wizards due to the cap space the move opens up for the team.
He posts: “The Wizards shifting from Poole to the veteran in McCollum, who has an expiring contract. Washington now is expected to approach $100 million in projected cap space in 2026. Pelicans move younger, possibly more dynamic with Poole and Bey.”

Questions still remain over the long-term future of Zion Williamson in New Orleans, but for now he is sticking around. It is unclear if the Pelicans are open to offers.
