The Sacramento Kings officially announced Thursday that Doug Christie will be retained as the team’s head coach.”After careful consideration, I am excited to announce Doug Christie as the next head coach of the Sacramento Kings,” General Manager Scott Perry said in statement. “I’ve known Doug a long time and have been impressed with his leadership, presence, and ability to connect deeply with his players. He embodies the core values we believe in — toughness, discipline, professionalism, a defensive mindset, and a selfless, team-oriented approach on offense. Our goal is to support him fully and help set the stage for his long-term success. We’re excited to move forward with Doug as our leader.”The Kings did not disclose the terms of the deal to elevate Christie from interim head coach. Sources close to the negotiation previously confirmed to KCRA 3 that Christie was getting the nod as part of a multi-year deal. “I am deeply humbled to be named head coach of the Sacramento Kings,” Christie said in a statement. “This organization and city have been home for over 20 years. I want to thank the Kings organization and Scott for their support during this process. For me, this opportunity is all about service to the team, the organization, and the city of Sacramento. My family and I couldn’t be more excited for this new chapter.”Christie has led the team since Dec. 27 after Mike Brown was fired. The team went 27-24 with Christie at the helm, but failed to make it out of the Play-In Tournament. Previously an assistant coach for the Kings since 2021, Christie also played for the team during their golden era run from 2000-2005. The team made the Western Conference Finals in 2002. Overall, he played 15 seasons in the NBA for seven teams. Perry, the Kings’ new general manager, had spoken glowingly of Christie during his first press conference last week, saying he was one of the first people he had met since arriving in town. “I watched him this year from afar in terms of his ability to have a presence on the court. I think he has made a connection with players,” Perry said. But Perry also said his phone has been “incessantly” ringing from others who were interested in the job. He said he planned to have “a few more conversations” before making the decision. Perry spent three months with the Kings in 2017 before leaving for the New York Knicks.
