The New Orleans Pelicans have fired Executive Vice President David Griffin.The Pels just wrapped up the 2024-25 season with a 21-61 overall record, which is their worst record since the 2004-05 campaign when they finished 18-64 overall. New Orleans’ season was derailed by injury almost immediately. Starting point guard Dejounte Murray broke his hand in the first game of the 82-game season and then tore his Achilles tendon. Zion Williamson suffered a hamstring injury the first week of the season and missed 27 games.Other players who ended the season injured include:Trey Murphy III, Herb Jones, CJ McCollum, Yves Missi, Jordan Hawkins, Kelly Olynyk, Bruce Brown, Karlo Matkovic and Brandon Boston.Griffin, who helped lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to an NBA championship in 2016, arrived in New Orleans in 2019 and was charged with rebuilding a franchise by trading All-Star player Anthony Davis. While Griffin received a substantial trade package for Davis and landed Zion Williamson in the NBA draft that summer, his teams could never avoid injury and never won a playoff series.In his six seasons overseeing the organization, the Pelicans made the playoffs just twice and never advanced out of the first round. The Pelicans have not won a playoff series since 2018 and have won only two since the franchise arrived in New Orleans in 2002. Several NBA insiders tell WDSU that former NBA player and longtime NBA executive Joe Dumars could be a candidate for a senior leadership position in New Orleans.Dumars was born in Natchitoches and played college basketball at McNeese State in Lake Charles. After helping lead the Detroit Pistons to two NBA championships (1989, 1990,) he moved into the Pistons front office and led that franchise from 2000 to 2014 and was named the NBA Executive of the Year in 2003.
