What’s different about Giannis Antetokounmpo situation this offseason?

What’s different about the Giannis Antetokounmpo situation this offseason? Jim Owczarski discusses next moves for the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Milwaukee Bucks selected Serbian teenager Bogoljub Marković at No. 47 in the second round of the NBA draft on June 26 and then got to work on rounding out the rest of their summer league roster.

It is a long shot that any undrafted free agent the Bucks sign makes the actual 15-person regular-season roster – or even a two-way slot – but the team is always looking for a diamond in the rough.

Summer league will run July 10-20 in Las Vegas. The Bucks have taken 20 players to summer league each of the last two seasons.

Here’s a look at who the Bucks may be bringing to Las Vegas and potentially sign to their G League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd:

Mark Sears, Alabama

The Bucks worked out the 6-foot guard in the pre-draft process and he acknowledged a report that he will sign a two-way deal with the team after going undrafted. An All-American for the Crimson Tide, Sears is a scoring point guard who has made 40% of his 3-pointers in two different college seasons.

Terrence Edwards Jr., Louisville

Edwards spent four years at James Madison before finishing his college career at Louisville, where he averaged 16.7 points per game on 33% 3-point shooting. At 6 feet, 6 inches, Edwards averaged 4.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game for the Cardinals. DraftExpress reported the signing.

Check back as this story develops and the Bucks sign more players.

What is a two-way contract?

Teams are allowed to sign 3 two-way players, which are contracts that allow players to split their time between the NBA club and their G League team. The players are capped at 50 NBA games and are not allowed on the postseason roster. The Bucks currently have guard Jamaree Bouyea and forward Pete Nance on two-way contracts for next season.

Bucks guards Ryan Rollins and AJ Green are recent examples of players originally signed to two-way contracts that earned fully guaranteed deals.

What is an Exhibit 10 contract?

Teams can also sign an undrafted player to an Exhibit 10 contract, which is a one-year deal worth the minimum salary and allows for a team to sign this player to a two-way contract before the season.
