The Boston Celtics have reportedly decided to exercise their team option for the coming 2025-26 NBA season for former two way point guard JD Davison, according to recent reporting from HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto. The University of Alabama alum was converted to a regular contract at the end of the 2024-25 regular season, with the now-exercised team option added what was a two-season deal at the time of signing.
Davison has not spent much time playing for the parent club since being drafted by the Celtics with the 53rd overall pick of the 2022 NBA draft, having spent most of his floor time with the Maine Celtics at the G League level. There, he won G League Most Valuable Player with Maine last season as one of the most accomplished guards in league history, while putting up an impressive 25.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, 7.6 assists, and 1.6 steals per game while shooting 33.6% from beyond the arc, 48.3% from the field overall, and 74.2% from the free throw line.

Still just 22 years old coming into Boston’s current campaign, Davison has some room to grow as a player, and perhaps now the runway to do it at the NBA level.
He should see more playing time with Boston this season with the Celtics’ guard rotation having lost the minutes played by Jrue Holiday after his trade to the Portland Trail Blazers, with at least some of his minutes likely to be given to Davison to start the season ahead.
