SAN ANTONIO – Bill Land, the legendary voice behind the San Antonio Spurs for 21 seasons, has announced his retirement ahead of the upcoming NBA season. This decision follows his 2023 diagnosis of multiple myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer.
Bill Land joined the Spurs broadcast team back in 1990, initially stepping in as an occasional fill-in announcer. Over the years, he gradually took on a more prominent role, and by 2008, he had become the lead play-by-play announcer, a position he held until the end of the 2023-24 season.
Beloved by Spurs fans for his enthusiastic catchphrase “Oh Mama!”, Land has been the voice behind some of the most memorable moments in Spurs history, including their five NBA championships and the record-breaking game at the Alamodome in 2023.
In 2023, Land was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer. Despite this challenging diagnosis, he continued to bring his passion and energy to the broadcasts. His retirement, announced ahead of the 2024-25 NBA season, marks the end of an era for the Spurs’ television broadcasting team.
The Spurs plan to honor him during their home opener against the Houston Rockets on October 26, 2024.
