The U.S. men’s national team return to play on Sunday against Costa Rica, facing off against a regional foe in the final quarterfinal of this summer’s edition of the Concacaf Gold Cup.

Things are off to a decent start for the USMNT at the Gold Cup with three wins out of three in the group stage, though the performances offered a mixed bag as head coach Mauricio Pochettino works with an inexperienced group. The standout of the USMNT’s Gold Cup run so far has been midfielder Malik Tillman, who scored his first three international goals during the group stage. The 23-year-old is beginning to offer solutions in an attacking midfield role that is starting to become incredibly competitive with up-and-comer Diego Luna in the mix and mainstay Gio Reyna at the Club World Cup with Borussia Dortmund.

Tillman is the first – and perhaps, so far only – rising talent to take advantage of the opportunities in front of them, though Sunday’s match against Costa Rica offers a fresh chance for many to do just that. Patrick Agyemang, for example, has been the starter so far at the Gold Cup, best positioned to stake his claim in a wide-open race to be the No. 9 with Folarin Balogun and Ricardo Pepi injured and Josh Sargent out of favor. The 24-year-old has yet to do so, though, and time is ticking for him to make his mark.
