Fans of the Boston Celtics have themselves something of a ‘glass half-full/glass empty’ moment unfolding with veteran big man Al Horford. The University of Florida alum is reportedly making up his mind abut his future with the Celtics per recent reporting from the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, and depending on your read of his note, this might mean good things in that Horford has not (yet?) decided to decamp from the Celtics a second time.

“I’m told … Horford continues to mull potential options for next season,” wrote Himmelsbach on social media Sunday (June 29) afternoon, “and at the moment appears unlikely to have a final decision on the first day of free agency tomorrow.”

Still, the fact that Horford is mulling offers from other teams is (and ought to be) enough for Boston fans to worry we might see a repeat of when the Dominican big man left the Celtics to join the Philadelphia 76ers in 2019, a scenario that went poorly for all involved, but was rectified with a trade back to Boston from the Oklahoma City Thunder the following season.

The Celtics won’t likely contend for a title next season, save for an unlikely early return by star forward Jayson Tatum, so it is understandable why Horford is weighing his options in such a scenario. But most fans of the team appear to be hoping he elects to return, given the ties he has forged with the fan base since joining the team in 2016.

The question remains as to whether Boston can offer him the contract and role he would want to stay, given how much the injury to Tatum has shifted the calculi for many moving parts of the Celtics organization, Horford of course included. Boston is reportedly looking to remain under the second apron this season, but would likely need another trade to accomplish that and offer Horford and fellow free agent big man Luke Kornet enough to stay with the team.

Expect a resolution soon after the start of free agency, though it is not out of the question that both Horford and Kornet may elect to give the Celtics time to secure the cap space they’ll need to accomplish their goals with regard to cutting salary elsewhere.
