The free agency period is one of the highlights on the calendar for NBA fans. It’s always exciting to see players in different places.

Unfortunately, there are not many stars available this summer, especially after LeBron James, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving committed to their existing teams.

However, the likes of Myles Turner, Jonathan Kuminga, and Chris Paul’s upcoming decisions will still create plenty of intrigue.

Before free agency starts on July 6, ESPN expert Bobby Marks has named the ‘wildcard’ team to keep an eye on.

Marks expects the Brooklyn Nets to be one of the biggest spenders in free agency because they have so much cap space to work with.

The Nets are still in a rebuilding phase after the departures of Kevin Durant, Harden, and Irving, but they would probably like to show some improvement next season.

“Brooklyn is going to be a wildcard in all of this because they have to spend 90 percent of the salary cap,” Marks explained.

“They basically have to spend $45 million by the first day of the regular season. Keep an eye on Brooklyn as far as a team taking on bad contracts and being part of three-team deals.

“They’re a destination for some salary dumps and contracts that are attached. So we will keep an eye on Brooklyn over the next few days here.”

The Nets have the money to take some punts on up-and-coming young players. Perhaps Kuminga and Quentin Grimes would fit the bill, as well as keeping Cam Thomas.

The Brooklyn Nets selected five players in 2025 NBA Draft

The Nets picked five players in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft: Egor Demin, Nolan Traore, Drake Powell, Ben Saraf, and Danny Wolf.

In doing so, they broke the record for the most first-round draft selections by one team in a single draft in NBA history.

The Nets not only raised eyebrows with how many players they chose, but also who they selected with their respective draft picks.

Brian Windhorst commented on the Nets’ draft decisions: “I’ve got some people telling me things about Brooklyn. People are making fun of these draft picks.”

Of course, it’s far too early to tell whether they succeeded or failed, but it must be concerning that other front offices were laughing at them.
