Tre Johnson established himself as a dynamic player at Texas, and the sixth pick in the 2025 NBA draft wants to continue that at the next level with the Washington Wizards.

Johnson was the SEC Freshman of the Year last season, averaging 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 33 games on 39.7% shooting from 3-point range. He was the 10th player in program history to be honored as Freshman of the Year.

The 6-foot-5 guard impressed the Wizards throughout the predraft process with his ability on the court, competitiveness and character. He is looking to showcase, among other traits, his ability to lead on and off the court.

“I see myself as a pretty good leader,” Johnson said. “(I’m) still learning and still being better at being a leader because there are steps I still got to take to become a great leader. But lead in different ways, by example, vocally. I’m more of a by-example type of guy, but it is however it needs to be to help the team, I would say.”

Johnson scored in double figures in all but two games, becoming the sixth freshman in history to lead the SEC in scoring average. He finished with the highest scoring average by a Longhorns player since J’Covan Brown in the 2011-12 season (20.1).

The 19-year-old was highly touted because of his dynamic scoring ability and potential to pull up from all over the court. He dazzled on offense by creating for himself and hitting difficult shots on the move or with his patented step-backs and side-steps.

Johnson is eager to get to work with the Wizards and won’t have to wait much longer. The team begins its stint in the NBA Summer League on July 11 against the Phoenix Suns and will play at least four more games in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I know a little bit about the roster just from watching games and seeing it on paper,” Johnson said. “I’m really excited to go against everybody in practice, make everybody better.”
