The San Antonio Spurs have passed the torch, for the first time in 29 seasons, to a new head coach. Mitch Johnson is officially taking over for Gregg Popovich, and the Spurs have their sights set on the future.
With Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Jeremy Sochan, Devin Vassell, and other key players on the roster, the Spurs have also been linked to superstars like Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo, although, looking ahead to the offseason, Johnson is not concerned about the moves the front office could make.

Instead, he wants to focus on the roster he has and worked with last season, beating the drum of internal improvement that has long been part of the “Spurs’ Way.”
“The thing that I will be focusing on the most in this offseason will be this current group of guys and the current players in our roster right now, and get them as much better as we can in that time allowed,” said Johnson.
“And then obviously Brian and the rest of the group will do the due diligence that they do and we will partner and discuss things and be on the same page and aligned, as we always are, but I think my sweat equity and time will be devoted to these current guys right here and continue to get them as improved as we can.”
In addition to the possible trades the Spurs could make, San Antonio boasts two lottery picks in the 2025 NBA Draft, and can add young talent organically.
