IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Tuesday night marked the fundraising kick off event for the newly named ‘Corda Sports Center’ which will be home to Murray Elite Basketball. The event ‘Building a Future: A Night for Impact’ was held at Big Grove Brewery in Iowa City.
Former Iowa men’s basketball star Kenyon Murray announced his plan to bring a 50,000 square foot basketball training facility to North Liberty. Under the Murray Family Foundation, they’re partnering with other nonprofits to connect with kids in need to the facility like the Zach Johnson Foundation and Junior Achievement of Eastern Iowa. The mental wellness app, Brightn, is also working with the nonprofit side of the project.
“I’ve been in the nonprofit game since 2011. We’re always battling for funds and donors and things like that, so the idea is to just bring all of that together. We don’t need to be the end all be all for people, we can just bring other resources that we may not be great at, that another organization is really good at. That way we can get the resources out to the families that really need them,” Murray explained.
The facility is expected to cost around $14 million dollars. They expect to break ground in September. The construction on the activity spaces are expected to take 12 to 14 months. The hope is to have the courts up and running in the fall of 2026.
