In recent NBA news, Lebron James has publicly expressed concern about whether the Los Angeles Lakers are building a championship roster. There might not be a fire, but smoke is swirling about the possibility that Bron could possibly take his talents elsewhere.

NBA Insider Kevin O’Connor, in a recent tweet, laid out a potential familiar scenario for Lebron James. Former USC Trojan Evan Mobley and his development, paired with star guard Donovan Mitchell, make coming back home to Cleveland look very attractive for LeBron.

“LeBron James to the Cavaliers would require getting under the second apron, which would mean losing Jarrett Allen, Darius Garland, and a third guy: probably Max Strus,” O’Connor wrote.

“It’s a lot to give up for a player who may not put you over the top and may have only one year left. Then again, Allen has folded in the playoffs and Garland is a tiny guard. Could trading them be a low key salary dump for Cleveland? Then whenever LeBron retires, the front office would have cap flexibility to build next to Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley with better-fitting players than Allen and Garland. So in a strange way, adding LeBron could help optimize their short-term title odds while also helping in the longer term.

“It’d be a complicated trade. A third team at least would have to be involved. A lot would have to go out. But if the chance is there, the Cavs should all-in on LeBron.”

With the two of the top three teams in the Eastern Conference missing their star player next season (Pacers, Celtics), the East is wide open. Lebron’s former team, Cleveland, was able to secure the No. 1 playoff seed last season before an injury-riddled postseason run which fell short. If Lebron wants to add one more ring to his legacy, Cleveland gives him the best opportunity; what a storybook ending for him to do it for his hometown team.

We could see former USC Trojan Evan Mobley next June holding the Larry O’Brien Trophy and getting an opportunity to play with one of the greatest NBA players of all time.
