CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers convened at the team’s facility in Camden, NJ on Tuesday to continue preparation for summer league. A “mini camp” is what they call it as the Sixers look to see what they have in the youngsters.

The summer league roster is headlined by rookies VJ Edgecombe and Johni Broome. The Sixers selected Edgecombe with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft and Broome with the No. 35 pick in Round 2 so Philadelphia will be looking to see what it has in its rookie class.

Along with those two rookies, second-year player Justin Edwards is serving as the team’s “veteran”. Despite being only 21, and younger than Broome, Edwards has a year in the NBA under his belt and summer league coach TJ DiLeo is looking to him to help bring the rookies along.

“Just to stay positive,” Edwards said of his advice to Edgecombe and Broome. “That’s the biggest thing. To always stay positive. It’s gonna be a lot of ups and downs. There’s gonna be times where they might not play. I might not play, but gotta stay level-headed and stay positive.”

In terms of his early impressions of his new teammates, Edwards has experience with both players. He played against Broome in the rough and tough SEC while Edwards was a freshman at Kentucky so he knows what to expect and he faced Edgecombe while in high school.

“I played against those guys,” he said. “I played against Broome in college, played against VJ in high school. They’re really outgoing people. Broome is more like me so quite a little bit, but I feel like once we get him a little more comfortable, he’ll be more open. I feel pretty good about those guys. They’re going to come in and help our team and help us in summer league.”

In terms of Edwards’ future in Philadelphia, he has reportedly agreed to a 3-year deal to remain with the Sixers. He impressed so much as an undrafted rookie averaging 10.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists while shooting 45.5% from the floor and 36.3% from deep. He hasn’t officially signed anything yet, but it is assumed that he will sign a deal.

“I feel like it just shows all the hard work I put in,” Edwards said of his contract offer. “Going undrafted, I didn’t let it determine the rest of my basketball life. I just worked hard and did what I was able to do and got a contract out of it.”

Edwards will now look to be the guy to help Edgecombe and Broome along as the summer league gets set to begin on Saturday in Salt Lake City against the Utah Jazz.
