Suns GM explains why the team picked Khaman Maluach in NBA draft

Former Phoenix Suns coach Frank Vogel was hired as an assistant for the Dallas Mavericks, according to multiple reports, on Wednesday, July 2.
Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd was an assistant coach under Vogel when they led the Los Angeles Lakers to the 2020 title. Kidd was fired as the Milwaukee Bucks‘ coach in 2018.
After Vogel was let go by the Lakers in 2022, he joined the Suns in 2023. He coached the Suns to 49 wins during the first year of their brief Big 3 era with Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal.
The Suns fired Vogel following their first-round playoff exit as the West’s No. 6 seed, swept by Minnesota. Vogel’s replacement, Mike Budenholzer, was also terminated after just one year following their disappointing 36-win season in 2024-25.
Budenholzer was replaced by Jordan Ott in June.
Kidd left the Lakers to become the Dallas coach in 2021, and the Mavericks eliminated the top-seeded Suns in the 2022 Western Conference semifinals.
Vogel was hired by Dallas as coaching consultant role during last preseason.
