The New York Knicks are trying to build a championship-contending roster for next season. While the Knicks have a solid core that led them to the Eastern Conference Finals against the Indiana Pacers last season, they are looking for depth building pieces.
One of those pieces may be found on their own roster.

SNY Insider Ian Begley is reporting that the Knicks could re-sign free agent forward Landry Shamet.
“I believe the Knicks do want to add another veteran free agent. To do so, they’d need to sign a player to a rookie free agent deal and trim around $36,000 in team salary. This theoretically can be done if Yabusele takes slightly less than the full taxpayer mid level exception. If Yabusele has the full mid level, the Knicks would need to shed salary via trade to get under the second apron,” Begley wrote. “As noted earlier, they have had interest in bringing back Landry Shamet. Shamet also has interest from contenders in both conferences.”
Shamet, who will be entering his eighth year in the league, averaged 5.7 points and 1.2 assists per game last season in 50 games.
The Knicks have already started to build their depth this offseason by adding shooting guard Jordan Clarkson from the Utah Jazz and power forward Guerschon Yabusele of the Philadelphia 76ers.

Re-signing Shamet could help New York get a boost this season from the bench. Shamet had two games off the bench with the Knicks with 20 or more points off the bench, including his season-high of 29 points against the Nets in the Knicks’ regular season finale.
