The Washington Wizards continue their offseason revamp, executing another trade, this time for Cam Whitmore.

The Houston Rockets player was traded to the Washington Wizards in exchange for just two second-round picks.

He was picked 20th overall by the Rockets in the 2023 NBA Draft, amid interest from multiple teams including LA Lakers.

However, Whitmore did not get regular playing time in Houston under coach Ime Udoka, featuring only 51 times in the 2024-25 season.

The Rockets made it to the playoffs, but Whitmore was given only seven minutes in the series against the Golden State Warriors.

Udoka made it clear that he expected consistency and outlined his expectations from Whitmore.

But the 21-year-old wanted a larger role, and the trade to the Wizards will certainly give him that.

Fans react to Whitmore being traded to the Wizards

Whitmore was one of the most athletic talents in his draft class and fans constantly demanded to see more of him on the court.

However, Udoka’s arrival meant that the Rockets went to a much more disciplined style of play and that made it difficult for Whitmore to play.

Moreover, a player of Whitmore’s talent being traded for just two second-round picks left not only Rockets fans, but also the others in the NBA community fuming.

One user tweeted on X: “Woww no way that’s all it took?”

While another said: “That’s a steal for the Wizards.”

Another added: “Whitmore will ignite with the Wizards.”

Bittersweet move. I absolutely hate it for Houston, but love it for Cam Whitmore.

Lakers fans also expressed their disappointment at the team not making an offer for Whitmore.

One said: “Lakers would’ve had to give up 2 first, Reaves, Rui, and Gabe just for conversations to start.”

While another remarked: “Rob couldn’t give up 2 second round picks.”

Whitmore will be a great addition to the Wizards

Whitmore was expected to be one of the best players in the 2023 draft as he proved his brilliance in the Summer League, winning MVP honors there.

His athleticism was expected to help him be a key part of the young Rockets core, but coach Udoka did not give him sufficient minutes.

This was expected to be on his mind as he approached free agency, but as a restricted free agent, there was not a lot Whitmore could control.

However, this move to the Wizards was the best one for him as it is a team that can give him the minutes he wants.

The roster is shaping up to be brilliant as they now have players like Khris Middleton, Marcus Smart and CJ McCollum.

While these veterans can contribute to the team, their young core of Whitmore, Tre Johnson, Alex Sarr and Bilal Coulibaly is also exciting.

Having finished in the bottom of the standings last season, these moves are encouraging as it sets them up for a better finish next year.

Whitmore is electric and his addition is expected to give the Wizards a boost that will make them a fun team to watch.
