The Silver and Black had a lackluster opener to Summer League with a 82-69 loss to the Heat, who dominated the inexperienced Spurs with Pelle Larson and Kel’El Ware doing most of the damage. The Spurs were missing the services of Dylan Harper and Riley Minix, which left them short-handed against a Heat squad with more players with NBA experience. There were a few bright spots for the Summer Spurs, with Nathan Mensah playing hard against Ware and holding up for the most part on the defensive end, and with Jameer Nelson Jr. having some nice plays from the point, including a spectacular dunk in traffic. Carter Bryant had some good moments, but he mostly looked lost and like he was going to take a while to get used to playing pro basketball, with as many fouls as points scored, with seven of each. Osayi Osifo outdid him, with a gaudy nine fouls in in 17 minutes, almost fouling out, which takes 10 fouls in Summer League.

Tonight, they face the Warriors, who don’t have any experienced NBA players, which would seem like a more even matchup, but they Warriors defeated the Lakers last night 89-84 with a balanced attack with four players in double figures, so it could be another tough afternoon for the inexperienced Summer Silver and Black dudes. Harper and Minix won’t play until the team goes to Vegas next week, so the best hope is that Bryant can play a little more under control, and the rest of the team can gain a little more organization on defense, which was sadly lacking yesterday. Really, Summer League is all about practice and player evaluation, but it would be nice to see if some semblance of team play breaks out in their second game together.

The Spurs have one more game in the California Classic after this one, facing the Summer Lakers on Tuesday night, and then they will be taking the short trip to Nevada to play in the Las Vegas Summer League, starting with a game against the Sixers on Thursday night, with a marquee matchup between second and third picks Dylan Harper and VJ Edgecombe.

Game Prediction:

After one of the assigned referees chokes on a hot dog in the pre-game, a random fan will be picked to help officiate the game. They will do a better job than the other two officials on the court, which will cause a fight to break out on the court between the regular and guest referees.

GO SPURS GOOOO!!!
