It’s safe to order your Detroit Pistons Chaz Lanier jersey.
The former basketball star will officially wear No. 20 to begin his NBA career. He wore No. 2 at Tennessee and North Florida in his college career. He wore No. 3 at Ensworth in Nashville during his high school career.
Both the No. 2 and 3 are retired by Detroit. No. 2 is claimed by Chuck Daly, a championship-winning coach, and No. 3 was worn by Ben Wallace, a championship-winning forward. However, Cade Cunningham currently wears No. 2 for the Pistons after being allowed to by Daly’s family.
Lanier will be the 28th player to wear No. 20 for Detroit. He’ll be the first since both Jaylen Nowell and Malcolm Cazalon both wore it in 2024. Former Vol Allan Houston also wore the number in his time with the Pistons from 1994-96.

Lanier spent just one season in Knoxville, but made the most of it. He set a new program record for 3-pointers made in a season with 123. This was the sixth-most made in SEC history, too. His 38 games started were also a tie for the most in a single season by a Vol.
He averaged 18 points per game on the season on 43.1% shooting from the field and 39.5% on 3-pointers. This percentage from range was the eighth-best in a single season in program history with a minimum of 200 attempts. His 3.24 threes made per game were also the second-most in school history.
Lanier also contributed 3.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. The result was him being a key piece of a Tennessee team that made a run to a second-straight Elite Eight and third in school history. He was named a First-Team All-SEC and Second-Team All-American member and the SEC Newcomer of the Year.
He was ultimately selected in the second round with the No. 37 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft by the Pistons. The only other Vol selected was Jahmai Mashack with the final pick of the event, No. 59. He will start his career with the Memphis Grizzlies.
