Following a week of negotiations, the Sacramento Kings and Detroit Pistons officially completed a sign-and-trade deal on Monday that included guard Dennis Schröder.
The Kings reached an agreement with Schröder during the opening hours of free agency on June 30th, but Sacramento looked to get creative in how they would officially acquire the veteran floor general.
Rumors of sign-and-trade deals that included Sixth Man of the Year candidate Malik Monk circulated for days, but the dynamic guard was not included in the final agreement between the Kings and Pistons.

Sacramento announced the full trade on Monday, as Schröder–who inked a three-year, $45 million deal (final year partially guaranteed) and a 2029 second-round pick landed with the Kings, while Detroit took back a protected (31st-55th pick) 2026 second-round pick.
Schröder was acquired by Sacramento using part of its $16.8 million trade exception that was created in the Kevin Huerter trade from February. Detroit will now also be able to make a $14.8 million player trade exception.
The Kings have the ability to use their mid-level exception ($14.1 million) in free agency if they choose to do so.
More on Dennis Schröder & the Kings
Schröder, who is coming off his 12th NBA season, spent the 2024-25 season with Brooklyn, Golden State, and Detroit, where he finished with averages of 13.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 0.9 steals per game on 40/34/83 shooting splits (75 games).
Many eyes have been on the Kings in the days and weeks leading up to free agency, as new general manager Scott Perry and his front office evaluate the state of the Sacramento roster that fell short of expectations in the 2024-25 season.
After trading star guard De’Aaron Fox to San Antonio in February, the Kings have been without a clear replacement at the starting point guard spot.
Malik Monk, who is naturally a two-guard, experienced a lengthy run at the position before being moved back into a reserve role under then-interim head coach Doug Christie. Sacramento ended the season with DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine initiating the offense, with Domantas Sabonis bringing the ball up the floor in some sets.
Now, the Kings will have a veteran guard in Schröder, who has experienced starting and sixth-man opportunities with several playoff teams.
The 32-year-old has played in 74 playoff games, most recently with Detroit in April and May, where he averaged 12.5 points, 3.7 assists, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 49 percent from the field and 47 percent from long distance.
More Sacramento Kings coverage from Sactown Sports
While NBA free agency is crawling along, the 2025 Summer League is right around the corner. The Sacramento Kings have already announced their full roster, led by head coach Dipesh Mistry.
While returning players and drafted rookies highlight the roster, undrafted defensive big Dylan Cardwell signed a two-way deal.
A league source told Sactown Sports that Isaiah Stevens, a rostered guard, will also be signing a two-way contract with the Kings.
The six-foot guard spent last season on the Miami Heat after going undrafted in the 2024 NBA Draft — Stevens spent most of his time in the G-League.
In 33 games played with Sioux Falls, he averaged 12.8 points, 9.3 assists, and 3.2 rebounds, converting 45.1 percent from the field and 31.4 percent from three.
His 306 assists were the most in a G-League season since 2014-15. Miami didn’t re-sign Stevens after awarding him a two-way midway through his rookie season.
Before going undrafted, the 24-year-old played four seasons at Colorado State.
Sacramento’s 2025 first-round pick, Nique Clifford, was around for Stevens’ senior campaign.
