Five former Texas basketball players will compete in the NBA’s 2025 Summer League July 10-20 in Las Vegas, a quintet of guard Max Abmas (Utah Jazz), guard Tre Johnson (Washington Wizards), forward Arthur Kaluma (Los Angeles Lakers), guard Sir’Jabari Rice (Los Angeles Lakers) and forward Kadin Shedrick (Cleveland Cavaliers).
Abmas, who spent his final collegiate campaign at Texas in the 2023-24 season, played in 50 games last season in the NBA G League for the Salt Lake City Stars. He averaged 13.8 points and 4.8 assists in 26.4 minutes per contest while converting 37.2% from 3-point range and 83.6% from the free throw line. An undrafted free agent in 2024, he signed with the Jazz before being waived prior to the 2024-25 season and signing with Utah’s G League affiliate.
Johnson played his freshman season at Texas in 2024-25 before his selection as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft by the Wizards last month. He became the 10th lottery pick in the NBA draft in Texas program history and the first since Jaxson Hayes in 2019. Johnson played and started 33 of Texas’ 35 games during the 2024-25 season and led the SEC in scoring, averaging 19.9 points. He’s expected to use the NBA Summer League to hone his game before joining the Wizards for the 2025-26 NBA season.
Kaluma, a one-year player at Texas last season, played in 33 games and led the team in rebounding with 7.5 boards a game while scoring 12.3 points. He didn’t get selected in the NBA draft but joined the Lakers on a free-agent contract.
Rice, who helped Texas reach the Elite Eight during his one season in Austin in 2022-23, has seen action in the NBA G League with the Austin Spurs (2023-24), Sioux Falls Skyforce (2024-25) and South Bay Lakers (2024-25) during the past two years. He played in 40 games for the South Bay Lakers last year and averaged 13.5 points and 3.1 assists in 21.6 minutes per contest while shooting 50.8% from the floor, including a 41.9% mark from 3-point range. He wasn’t selected in the 2023 draft but signed his first professional contract with the San Antonio Spurs.
Shedrick, who spent the past two seasons as Texas, played and started all 35 games last season for the Longhorns and led the team with 58 blocks while averaging 8.8 points and 6.1 rebounds. He didn’t get selected in last month’s draft but signed a free-agent contract with the Cavaliers.
