Q: Ira, how can you not like what you see in summer league from Pelle Larsson? You mentioned in one of your stories that he fouls too much, but it’s not as if he is going to need to play as much during the season. – Leo.

A: Agreed, the hustle and drive seemingly never wane with Pelle Larsson, be it during the regular season or even in summer league, and he certainly merited making the All-California Classic Team based on his efforts there. The question becomes whether there is a role available when the games count for real. For now, Tyler Herro, Davion Mitchell and Normal Powell all seemingly would rank ahead in the backcourt rotation. so it could come down to whether Pelle plays ahead of Jaime Jaquez Jr. or Kasparas Jakucionis – or if Terry Rozier is given a veteran benefit of the doubt, if he remains. But if similar efforts continue in summer league, it will become increasingly difficult to have Pelle out of the mix when the games count for real. Over the dog days of the regular season, there is plenty to be said about injecting an energizer into the mix.

Q: Ira, usually if you struggle in summer league it’s a good sign as a possible flop in the NBA. Kasparas Jakucionis has not looked good. Have you gotten the same vibe? – Roy, Miami.

A: Kasparas Jakucionis being unable to make shots during the first three games of summer league is not a vibe, it’s a reality. And it also came amidst players who mostly will not be in the NBA this coming season. Certain players work better amid talent, which could well be the case for Kasparas, especially when he gets the chance to be coached by Erik Spoelstra. But also maintain the perspective that this is a No. 20 pick, a draft slot that often requires G League seasoning. So instant gratification from Kasparas? Possibly not. But summer league compared to the NBA regular season is almost an entirely different sport. For now, the benefit of the doubt should be the approach.

Q: Norman Powell trade is excellent by Heat management. So, we are playing for now?  – Chadwick, Lake Worth.

A: It’s the Heat, so they’re playing for both. The kids will play if they show development, but the veterans will be the ones turned to during winning time. It’s a balancing act, but one the Heat at least now will have the opportunity to balance, based on the revised mix of the roster.
